Dissolve the Union--Just Like Yugoslavia!
I believe that we need to finish the Civil War--either defeat the fascists forever, or let them take a piece of the whole country for themselves and get them the hell out of our lives. They will destroy whatever piece they end up with, and their children and grandchildren, but we will not bear any legal, moral, or other responsibilty for it, nor the cost. And we can provide refugees (and ourselves) with a good life in a good government.

This isn't a new idea, but usually it's the fascists wanting to take over New Hampshire, or one of the Carolinas, or Alaska, or something. Let them have some contiguous area that we can be separate, and demonstrate that not all Americans are evil (or equal, for that matter).

A competition (and their failure in it) might do more to convert opinion than any co-operative venture ever will. And whether the two ever become one again or not, at least half of the nation will live long and prosper.

3. National Referendum--New Constitutional Convention
We're going there anyway, might as well plan for it.

5. We're going there? Really? I missed the memo.
You sadly misread the feelings of the vast majority of Americans if you think that there is any support for dividing the country. You also seem to forget that most states are not solidly red or blue. Hell, millions of families are not solidly red or blue.

6. And You Misread History
Public opinion is a snapshot--history is a continuum.

2. Maybe not JUST like Yugoslavia?
I do think a Soviet 1991-style collapse is coming if something doesn't chance soon.

7. Are you forgetting the genocide which occurred in the dissolution of Yugoslavia?
This is far from ancient history.

8. Does one America need the other?
Edited on Thu May-24-07 01:37 PM by dave_p
It's not so long ago that angry Democrats were talking about secession: strange how its gone quiet. Maybe the red states should be offered the option too if they lose in '08. Does the free, creative, dynamic part of America need Jesusland? Not really, Democrats will keep the ingenuity, most of the educational excellence and the modern sources of wealth. The other part will have oil to trade, so it won't be entirely bereft of resources. The real US owes it to the world not to let its might be hijacked again by the far right. Let them go.

12. That's for them to choose
... but maybe it's time to let the two irreconcilable views of America go their separate ways: let any 17 states come up with their own idea of a more perfect union, and put it to the vote in all the rest - join them or stay put. This can't go on: too many minds have been twisted by the far right to take the country forward without destructive division.

10. Have you ever travelled? Do you want "ethnic cleansing"?
First of all, I've been north, east, south and west in the US. There are good people...and there are bad people. It doesn't necessarily go along political lines either. There are some places you drive by quickly while others you want to move to.

It's very simplistic to think whole regions of a country are of any particular ilk with ALL the population in that area. Even the South has a lot of progressive people within areas where you'd find conservative theocrats.

It's just life in all its many flavors.
