Who here has read/heard that many Iraqis want us to leave?
And why isn't Congress aware of that fact? Found this tacked on to live blogging of the funding debate by AfterDowningStreet today:

http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/

1:23 p.m. Here's the vote on the rule to have the debate and vote, H Res 438 providing for the consideration of the Senate amendment to H.R. 2206, making emergency supplemental appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2007. Only seven Democrats voted No: CLAY, HARMAN, KUCINICH, MCNERNEY (finally), MOORE, STARK, WATERS. Harman nearly lost a primary to peace candidate Marcy Winograd. Where are our other usually reliable members? The vote was 218-201. They could have voted No and still achieved passage. 8 Dems and 5 Repubs didn't vote at all (see above link). Here's what the AP says:

"The House voted 218-201 to advance the measure, paving the way for a final vote later that day. Democrats, who said they were disappointed with the White House deal, agreed not to block debate so long as the House would vote later this year on a separate proposal to bring troops come home before July 2008."

This little crumb (from AP) might be closest thing to silver lining on this one:

"The bill also for the first time explicitly states that the U.S. would leave Iraq if asked by the Baghdad government."

Unbeknownst to Congress, it already has been.

1. I don't know about the Iraqi government, which was set up by the US
but i read a few weeks ago that over 70% of the Iraqi people want us out. And what is a "democracy" but government by the people.?

12. I thought that it was reported more like 80% of native Iraqis want our meddling imperialistic a** ..
out of THEIR country. Again, Dear Leader is LYING, i.e., he said that the American people want to be there and that the Iraqis want us there. :grr:

2. It's why they have such impressive turn-outs to vote;
they believed the US would leave if they did.

14 permanent bases built say we are never leaving. :grr:

3. Majority of parliament, but just barely.
From WaPo, May 11:

"Iraq's lawmakers are moving further away from the views of the government, particularly on the basic issue of the American presence in their country. The draft bill is being championed by a 30-member bloc loyal to Sadr, but it has also gained support from some other Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish legislators. So far, at least 138 lawmakers have signed the proposed legislation, the slimmest possible majority in the 275-member parliament..."

4. The majority of the parliament members want us out, not just

the people. I've posted this article several times. http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/51624

It explains the bench mark that GWB wants met, the oil legislation that will profit US oil corps and give the 30 year lease on the field, requiring us to have a presence to protect US interests for decades (that is why the embassy and the bases - keeps the military industrial complex and the oil corps happy).

Only problem is, the Oil Workers Union, one of the most powerful forces in Iraq, don't approve of the legislation and have threatened to strike.

Read the background of the region - the history of the oil fields and previous occupations.

It's all about the oil. :(

6. So, we've been asked to leave, game over, right?
:hide: The Dems are now saying things they have no intention of following through on, because I'm hoping they can't be so ignorant as to not have heard what's coming out of Iraq as far as our popularity there. (And yes, I heart run-on sentences! :silly: )

8. I keep getting the feeling they are being fed bullshit intel
top secret terra warnings. They are acting as if they are frightened. If they are being feed false intel, they need to remember the bullshit they ate with a grin in the months rushing up to war. They ALL cannot be totally ignorant, can they?

I am so damned disappointed in Pelosi, I can't see straight. :(

I hope you are doing well. :pals:

9. Thanks for asking, my friend,
doing well here as I hope you are there. Cool spring for TX, so I hope that bodes well for summer, if you know what I mean.x(

I'm shocked and disappointed that they'd cave so easily, and am not understanding it myself. I guess they could really be bought by corp. monsters, are wedded to the oil, and/or have their eye on 08 to the exclusion of all else.

Another option could have something to do with illegal wiretapping and what that might have dug up that they want to keep buried.
Whatever the motivation, I sure would like to know one day.

13. Illegal wire taps - our government
what are you nutts????

I never considered that, but it is a probability. If I win the lotto one day, I am going to buy an island (without oil resources so no one will want it) and I will start my own government, a new nation -- I'll send you an invite. If we bring enough along, we might be able to even have an election that is more than just "a show of hands please" --

Relative to the weather, I am tired and of the mind that if it happens again, it happens. Not much I can do but try to get out of it's way.

You take care and stay safe

11. Sure. Just like when Smirk said "anyone who helped out Plame will be
asked to leave". Remember that lie?

5. U.S. Marine reported that very thing
In 2004 to my son's Boy Scout meeting. He said the Iraqis don't want us there and there is nothing we can do to force democracy on them. This commander had been with the Marines for 17 years and said we are wasting our time.

I would hope the silver lining holds.

10. Among the people of Iraq it's about 90%
the government was hand-picked by Smirk so it'll be a long wait for them to ask.
