Maryland's First Black Congressman Dies At 85

(AP) BALTIMORE A founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who was Maryland's first black congressman has died at 85.

Parren Mitchell died Monday of complications from pneumonia at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Mitchell served in the administrations of Baltimore mayors Theodore McKeldin and Thomas D'Alesandro the Third. He also served under Governor Millard Tawes. He was first elected to Congress in 1970 and served eight two-year terms.

Baltimore Congressman Elijah Cummings calls the late Parren Mitchell "a true servant leader."

In a statement issued after news of Mitchell's death Monday, Cummings said in his words "Mitchell dedicated himself to opening the doors to opportunity for all Americans."
