DOJ EXPANDS U.S. attorney investigation |
|
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/05/30/doj-expands-us-attorney-investigation/DOJ expands U.S. attorney investigation. Today, Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine and counsel for the Office of Professional Responsibility wrote to the Senate Judiciary Committee and announced that their offices are expanding their U.S. attorney investigations to the allegations of the politicization of the Justice Department’s hiring practices. From their letter:

I left the town hall at about 7:30 and he hadn't come back yet at that point. He was there when I got there at 5 and I spoke to him briefly. He had to leave, as he was hosting another town hall on gas prices at the same time. He said he'd be back. By 7:30, he wasn't back yet, and a lot of people were leaving -- it was very hot, in an un-air-conditioned room in a church in Detroit. There were about 400-500 people, I would say. I wasn't sure if he'd actually make it back, so I left to get home in time for Keith, since Al was going to be on.
I guess he made it back, and it sounds like he said something very different from what I heard him say two weeks ago when I heard him speak at his congressional district meeting. At that time, he said impeachment would never get through his committee. He said it's not going to happen. The usual stuff -- too many other things we have to do, not enough votes, more harm than good, etc.
Now it sounds like he's saying it could happen if enough people push for it. I think in actuality he supports it, but doesn't want to do anything unless he's sure it could go all the way. My feeling is that if we can get Republicans behind it, like with Nixon, then we've got a chance. I wish I had heard him speak last night, but I had a feeling he might not make it back and I wanted to get out of downtown before dark, as I don't know my way around very well.
On edit: Oops -- I went back to read the article linked to in the thread, and it looks like he may not have come back. They must have gotten this statement from him before he left. I'll have to go back and read the whole thing more carefully.

Now I'm totally confused about his stand. On one hand, he supports the movement, on the other, he's not going to do anything about it. I guess it means that if there's enough public pressure, maybe he'll do something. There's never a black and white in politics (unless it's a Repuke being against abortion or gay marriage).

4. Hmn, can't get around my cynicism that "expand" in their terms means "whitewash." |
|
And why do I suspect the results of their investigation and its "expansion" won't be released until sometime after November 2008? And that the results will be that "while some mistakes were made, they were done in a spirit of good faith and public service, and as all parties have resigned (excepting Gonzales), we consider the matter closed."
I would be thrilled to be wrong all around.

6. Can I suggest you google Glenn Fine, the DOJ AG? I remember |
|
reading an article about him recently and how respected/non-partisan he is. That gives me a bit of faith. I just googled and there are several articles about him following up on investigations where the wh tried to stonewall him. Fingers crossed...

9. A whole lotta looking and a whole lack of results |

Hush, hush. Behind closed doors. Don't tell the peasants that their country has been looted. Yeah. I'd like to be wrong, too, but I waited a long time thinking that the law would catch up. Instead we got Gonzales. I'm beyond cynical.
