SARASOTA (AP) - Steve Stanton, fired as suburban Largo's top official two months ago after announcing plans to become Susan Stanton, hoped this more cosmopolitan tourist town was ready for a transgendered city manager. It wasn't -- the city commission today picked a less controversial candidate.
"I just don't think the world is ready just yet," Stanton said as he made a hasty exit from Sarasota City Hall.
The five commissioners hired Robert Bartolotta, 59, who resigned as city manager in the South Florida city of Jupiter in 2004 to care for his terminally ill wife. She has since died. Their second choice was Marsha Segal-George, 54, a deputy chief administrator in Orlando. Stanton was the third finalist.
