The McClatchy Group: I like their work.

"McClatchy operates 32 daily newspapers in 29 markets, with a total circulation of 3.3 million. <1> In addition, McClatchy operates a number of community papers that are printed with less frequency. The Minneapolis-St. Paul's Star Tribune, acquired in 1998 and sold again in 2006, had the highest circulation of all McClatchy newspapers."

McClatchy purchased Knight Ridder, formerly the United States' second-largest chain of daily newspapers, on June 27, 2006

Seems like some really good reporting is coming from McClatchy.

I also like Atlantic Monthy, New Yorker, Toledo has a great paper.

1. Keep your eye on Christian Science Monitor as well
They've done some great pieces over the last few years that you don't see very often.

2. Count Syracuse as among their papers
Knight Ridder did a tremendous job, I'm hoping that McClatchy does as well. I just started receiving the newspaper again, so far it looks good.

3. It's the Knight-Ridder DC bureau that has been highly performing for years
that McClatchy recently acquired. I don't know how long it will last before they get reigned in.

4. I doubt that they will be reined in because both McClathy and
Knight Ridder appear to have the same journalistic philosophy...honesty and hard work from the news department. I am grateful that a company with the same attitude purchased KR; I did not want to see their ideals closed down.

5. And the Minneapolis Star Tribune has been going down hill fast
since it was sold. A lot of long time staff and reporters have been "offered buy outs". Their circulation is dropping and the new owners (who are part of an investment group and never owned a paper before) can't seem to understand why - or they know exactly what they're doing and plan to use the paper as a capital loss deduction.

The only other newspaper option is the area is the St. Paul Pioneer Press and so far the Strib doesn't suck quite as badly as the Pioneer Press (though it's getting there).

I don't know why McClatchy did this and I fear it's only a matter of time before the new owners sell it to Murdoch.

6. Yes - they have sold individual papers in key cities to RW moneymen.
