14. Great, I'll watch for it!
I'm sure someone will post results for Obama's event too, at least I hope so!

Such a great thing about DU! We can get great local news from all corners of the country, and even the world with many international friends.

3. My guess...
Is that Edwards is having the same trouble in North Carolina as he is in South Carolina...he simply isn't as popular among African American voters as Hillary and Obama are...

6. Because Bill Clinton is wildly popular with blacks and Obama IS black
Sounds simple-minded, but it's true. Edwards' policies aren't the problem; he's just up against two juggernauts here.

The clincher for me was when Elizabeth Edwards compared JRE with Jesse Helms the other day; if that isn't a sign he's hunting for votes in new parts, I don't know what is.

7. I think John is not trying hard enough to get the black vote
He's banking on poor and lower middle class whites more than anything.

11. "poor and lower middle class whites"
Groups that have worse traditional turnout rates that African Americans even though they are larger in size as a demographic.

8. Edwards is trying to position himself as the GE choice but this was a mistake
I love Elizabeth Edwards but this is the 2nd gaffe in my opinion from her in the last month.

First she calls a candidate who has been derided as a Breck girl the feminist candidate. And now she compares him to Helms.

reverse discrimination to go around. I'm always stunned to see the preferential
treatment that African American customers get from African American clerks
when I've just been treated--if not rudely--at least with disdain--by the same
clerk.

And I'm a Yankee. No southern drawl. And I'm almost always pleasant
to anyone who has to man a cash register on her/his feet all day.

16. Well...last time I looked...Hillary CLinton is white...
In any case I was not suggesting African American voters were sexist or racist...I am suggesting that Hillary and Obama have done a better job so far appealing to that segment of voters...

For Hillary, part of it is the justifiably positive feelings african american voters have for Bill CLinton, in addition to Hillary's efforts to reach out to them, and her excellent civil rights record.

There is no doubt that being black helps Obama in this segment of the population, and that is understandable, but I think he does a good job speaking to their concerns as well...

Edwards has just never caught on well with them for whatever reason...but I don't think it is because african americans are racist

17. Edwards couldn't have won SC in 2004 without strong support from blacks
Sharpton only got 10% of the black vote in 2004; Edwards got 37%.

The competition is just much tougher this year.

13. According to the cross tabs Obama gets 45% of the AA vote in SC
Matt Stoller over at MYDD points these out a lot and there is a lot interesting information in them. Hillary gets 23% and Edwards 14% of the African American vote. Interesting is that Edwards' main support is white males. Hillary seems to appeal to more women of all races. Obama appeals to African Americans of both genders. On age the only real stand out is that Obama supporters are mainly under 60.

19. It's still a red state. Repubs will push for Hillary.
Because she has the most baggage & they can use it to motivate their base.

Edwards' strength is in the Asheville area (828) and Chapel
Hill, Raleigh,
Durham areas.(919) Hillary is strongest in southern and
eastern part of state

about the same throughout the state, with the exception of
