 No wonder he is ran away from Ames! This is also indictive of the unimportance of national polls right now. Giuliani has a commanding lead in national polls but he is floundering in Iowa and not doing well in NH. These are states where voters get to see all the candidates regularly and the media provides a more equal volume of coverage of candidates. In contrast Romney, is in the single digits in national polls but leads in Iowa and NH.

Granted, this was a survey by the Multiple Choice Mitt camp but it is consistent with other polls that show Romney surging in Iowa and Rudy "terror, terror, terror!" Giuliani struggling in Iowa.

Someone will also point out that he is 2nd and I am spinning the result. I disagree. The real story is his weakness. Despite his name ID and 6 years of being fellated by the MCSM, the fact that he is this weak against relative unknowns like Fred Thompson, Huckabee, and Gingrich is very telling. It would not be shocking if some of these candidates (and Gingrich if he runs) surpassed Giuliani over the next 7 months.

POLL: Romney's Iowa Survey

Via Marc Ambinder's new blog, a new poll conducted for the Romney campaign of 402 likely Republican caucus goers in Iowa (5/29 through 5/31 by Voter/Consumer Research (R) ) finds Romney leading former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (29% to 12%) in a statewide caucus; former Sen. Fred Thompson and former Speaker Newt Gingrich both trail at 10%, Sen. John McCain at 9%, former Gov. Mike Huckabee at 7%.==

7. Good question. How embarassing would it be for the "front-runner" to fall to 5th or 6th in Iowa? nt

3. Don't like that Romney is doing well in early states.
He has a shitload of money and is the new favorite for the neocons. Frankly, he's dangerous.

6. He is a much weaker general election candidate than Giuliani and probably also McCain
I would certainly prefer him winning the Repuke nomination than Giuliani, who could cause real problems for us, and McCain. McCain at least is perceived as someone who stands on principle and is strong. Romney can be painted as a huge flip-flopper, does not have the compelling personal story McCain has, and (unfortunately, not because it hurts Romney, but because we should not be voting based on someone's religion, race, sex, or sexual orientation) some voters will write him off simply because of his religion.

10. I disagree
McCain has been running an extremely embarrasing campaign and is floundering. Giuliani is running an unsubstantial campaign based on 9/11 and nothing else.

The only advantage McCain and the Ghoul have over Romney is name recognition. Romney is probably more charismatic and clever than both of them combined.

5. Remember what happened to Howard Dean?
In '03, he was the presumptive Democratic nominee. By Iowa, he was toast. Mark my words - this WILL happen to RG.
