Obama targets voter intimidation

WASHINGTON (AP) - Illinois Senator and presidential hopeful Barack Obama argued today for passage of a federal law that would target voter intimidation.

The Democrat -- who is the chief sponsor of such legislation -- acknowledged that his proposal was designed to send intimidators a message.

Under the proposal, an offender could face up to five years in prison for knowingly deceiving people on the time, place or manner of conducting a federal election, or misleading the public about voter eligibility.

Obama testified about the measure at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing today.

The goal is to eliminate such practices as distributing leaflets that tell Republican voters that they should vote on one day, and Democrats must vote on another.

Obama's bill has a House version sponsored by Representatives John Conyers of Michigan.
