Edwards takes on Giuliani over terrorism in NY
Thursday, June 7, 2007

----
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards chose Republican hopeful Rudy Giuliani's home turf of New York on Thursday to say it was not enough to talk tough on terrorism without addressing its causes.
Former New York mayor Giuliani has focused his campaign on his image as a strong leader after the September 11 attacks destroyed the city's World Trade Center towers.
Edwards dismissed criticism of his "bumper sticker" comment as rhetoric aimed at presenting Bush critics as unpatriotic.
"If Mayor Giuliani believes that what President Bush has done is good and wants to embrace it and run a campaign for the presidency saying 'I will give you four more years of what this president has given you,' he's allowed to do that.
"He'll never be elected president of the United States, but he's allowed to do that," he said.
"America is looking for something different. They want us to be tough ... but they expect us to be smart," he said.
Earlier at the news conference to unveil what he called a "smart" plan to both fight terrorists and undermine terrorist recruitment, Edwards said all the Republican candidates seemed intent on "trying to be a bigger, badder George Bush.
"I think they want to become George Bush on steroids."

1. George Bush on steroids! Good Lord!
Can you imagine that?

I like the fact that Edwards is coming out right away and challenging Giuliani. It's good to link all those Republicans to Bush.

3. It's the most important thing
Republicans are either fundies or lunatics, that's what we have got to convince voters. Too many of them are still unwilling to seriously look to a Democratic President. I don't know that our leadership understands we've got to connect them to Bush, which automatically disqualifies them.

2. K&R
I'm sick of Mayor Rudy doing nothing but harping on 9/11 all the time. If it hadn't been for Republicans turning a blind eye on the threat of Bin Laden, 9/11 wouldn't have happened in the first place.

7. Edwards has been leading on most issues...
I have to give him his due respect. Edwards is on top of his game right now...Obama and Clinton better get a clue before they're swept up.

10. Nice moves!
Both his thinking: a "smart" plan to both fight terrorists and undermine terrorist recruitment

...and his take-it-to-him approach.

11. I Wonder If Anyone Has Been Noticing That John Edwards Has Out
front AND first on many of these types of issues. Simply stating the obvious without worrying about repercussions! He has done this quite a bit lately and seems to be saying "damn the consequences" THIS is MY agenda and I want to put it out there.

Of course, I know many here who will make something else of this, but ask me if I care? I've gotten pretty savvy about just WHO will run the "negative" for the most part. I won't be taking part in those discussions!

Yep... me and the monkeys again!!!

13. We need other leading Dems to follow Edwards' lead on this
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 06:00 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
We need to wrestle the issue of terrorism from the repukes. We will need a team effort to do this. Hopefully HRC and Obama follow Edwards on this. We will also needing leading Dems in Congress to do this. We must make Americans realize that we, not the repukes, are the true national security party. If we can do that we will win in a landslide. After all, aside from terror, what else can the repukes run on?
