Is that "near beer"? can you even get that in Europe? (Just kidding)...

17. Interesting, in the US there's non-alcoholic beer and "regular"
but I've seen "low-alcohol" beer in the UK that was around 2%. You could get a bit of a buzz, but it was more trouble than it was worth, which was sort of the point.

6. Yeah, but ask any alcoholic, and they will tell you that they avoid
non-alcoholic or near beer just as much as the real thing. And just by-the-by, non-alcoholic beer actually has alcohol in it, just very small amounts...

9. Bingo. Ask around Austin
and you'll find enough people who saw him drunk as governor.

Also, watch the clip of him on 9-11, in his recorded message from Louisiana. Dude was slurring, his eyes were red, his cheeks flushed. He was drunk that day. I believe that's why they hid him from the public until that night.

12. A recovering alcoholic in a 12 step program wouldn't touch a NA beer.
He's a boozer, always has been.

I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it a habit of drinking NA beer in front of people, then sneaking the real thing backstage (so to speak)...it would give a cover to the smell of the real stuff.

18. But he's never been in a 12-step program, has he?
Not that this is a knock against him (or for), but hasn't he always maintained that his re-emerging faith in God & Jesus was the catalyst that also enabled him the willpower to stop drinking?

Believe him or not (and I trust him as far as I can throw him, like 99.44% of the DUers), that is as valid an explanation as any. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one way to achieve sobriety.

23. Untreated alcoholics have a very poor prognosis
no matter how much they love Jesus. Yes, they might be able to stop drinking for long periods of time, but the underlying emotional problems are never dealt with the way they are in 12 step programs. Dry drunks--alcoholic behavior without the alcohol--are frequent and frightening. Physical problems arising from years of abuse are not addressed.

Also, there is a huge difference between problem drinkers and alcoholics. Problem drinkers are not yet addicted and can stop, although they do much better with treatment, too. Alcoholics, especially maintenance drinkers, need treatment, period.

Anyone who has ever lived with an alcoholic knows that Stupid was drunk at last year's G8. I sincerely doubt that is the only time because his neurological deterioration has continued throughout his pResidency.

There are alternatives to the 12 step programs, all with varying rates of success. Some are quite good. However, an alcoholic needs something besides the bible. The bible alone won't provide what he needs to recover.

26. His "faith in God & Jesus" is campaign bullshit for the addled masses.
He's no more a religious man than I am an astronaut.

And in my (admittedly limited) experience, I have never met a recovering alcoholic that has maintained sobriety over the years without either being (1) in AA or (2) some sort of long-term and uninterrupted therapy.

14. Warsteiner makes a low-alcoholic beer
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 10:32 AM by leveymg
Look at the label on the bottle, and compare to the image of Warsteiner "non-alcoholic" beer (link) (the Premium gold label (right) is normal beer, but the neck labels are similar). http://beergeek.stores.yahoo.net/nowagebe12.html

I've been having as much fun with this story as anyone this morning, but don't take this whole thing too far. We don't want the wingnuts to say we wear too much tinfoil, I mean beer wrappers.

22. Worthwhile research at last
The label, blurred doesn't look like your example exactly, but we need more detail. Bitter taste would explain his facial grimace during the downing. And's its residual alcohol content for sure would be very helpful.

25. I get migraines from alcohol
in any form. I really missed beer when I had to admit I could never drink again for the rest of my life unless I learned to love a thirty six hour migraine.

I tried drinking Birell. It was at least as good as commercial US lagers, which means it was carbonated cat pee if I tried to drink it at room temperature, but the twice a summer I wanted a cold one, it worked.

O'Doul's left me flat, I just wasn't impressed, and since that's all I've found here in the wild west, I've just learned to live without the occasional cold almost one in the summer.

I haven't seen Warsteiner's, but might give it a try if I do. If it's as lousy as the others, I suppose I could make a beer batter something or other for dinner.

37. In the fifth picture, especially,
that blurred, slack-jawed, "where the hell am I" look on his face reminds me of every alcohol-impaired person I've ever seen, from my f-i-l to the guy with the paper-bag wrapped bottle on the corner. He was drinking during that summit and he's drinking during this one. He probably looks forward to the chance to get away and get hammered. What Happens at the G-8, Stays at the G-8, right?

have about as much credibility as his claims that he's a "religious" person . . . both are merely public relations tactics that have absolutely no basis in reality . . . he is, and always has been, an immoral, unethical, spirit-deprived drunk/punk . . .

38. Wild-eyed and drugged and downing beer?
From the reports over the past week, a few Texans -- friends and donors -- have seen some strange behavior -- chest thumping and "I am the President" scared a few --
A rant about Iraq and being misunderstood scared some others.

Besides the beers -- and I doubt he'd want to down some straight hard liquor in public --
I think the question is how much anti-anxienty drugs he's taking -- ????
