2. You know, Tweety just gave us a big clue during the discussion of the Sopranos
as to how he picks the presidential candidates he likes.

He said something to the effect of, likability counts a lot. If you like a guy, it doesn't matter what terrible things he does, you can't help but like him.

I believe he was referring to Tony Soprano, but he could just as easily have been referring to Dubya, Rudy, Fred Thompson or any other man-crush Tweety has ever had on a politician.

He just couldn't help it. They did terrible things, sure, but damn, they were so LIKABLE.

7. Good point. And Andrea shot back that these times are too serious
and hopefully Americans have moved beyond the shallow "likeability" factor.

Hi Berry! :hi:

10. I only wish.
As for me, I wish that people who hear the phrase "charm offensive" would focus less on the former word and more on the latter.

And also remember the words of Gavin deBecker, the security expert: namely, don't forget what the word "charm" means. It means someone is trying to put you under a spell. People who are "under a spell" aren't able to use sound judgment. They are "bewitched" and "beguiled." They are not making decisions based on fact. They are being seduced.

(Hi Olney! :hi:)

8. Perhaps the "charm offensive" takes precedence over the "harm offensive?" (nt)

Or is Mr. Greenspan closer to her in age than I'm thinking he is?

4. They were complaining about Hillary's voice beforehand.
One good point that Andrea did make was that the era of electing a president based on whether they could play a sport may be over- these are serious times.
I hope she is right. We need a serious person with intellectual brilliance to help us claw out of the chimp's sinkhole.

Word Of the Day

Today's Word:
Avuncular (adjective)

Pronunciation: <ê-'vên-kyu-lêr>

Definition: Resembling an uncle in appearance or behavior, related to an uncle or uncles; mature and tolerant.

Usage: The noun from today's word, "avuncularity," is rarely used. The same applies to the verb, to avunculize "behave like an uncle," although you are quite likely to encounter the adverb, "avuncularly," in your reading.

Suggested Usage: Today's word is usually applied to men of some years or who behave maturely, "The avuncular manager helped Rathbone get off to a smooth start in his new job." While avuncularity implies a safe, friendly relationship, it also vaguely hints at condescension: "Rolf's avuncular behavior toward Bess was less and less appreciated as their relationship developed toward romance."

Etymology: Why the av-, I'm sure you want to ask; why not simply "uncular?" Today's word comes from Latin avunculus "maternal uncle," the diminutive of avus "grandfather." English "uncle" itself is a borrowing of the entire Latin word after French had smoothed off the edges ("oncle" in French today). Lithuanian avynas "uncle" derives from the same source. (Today's word was the result of a suggestion by Angela Stapleton, to whom we offer gratitude in its sincerest form.)
