Edwards Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Home Care Workers
Edwards Statement On Supreme Court Decision On Home Care Workers
John Edwards for President
Monday, June 11, 2007

----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement about today's Supreme Court decision holding that home care workers are not covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

"Excluding home care workers from the protections of federal minimum wage and overtime laws is wrong. In a nation of our wealth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty. It's wrong for workers and it's wrong for the economy. The Bush Administration may not know the difference between professional home care workers and babysitters, but older Americans and people with disabilities who rely on them for quality care certainly do. Congress should do what's right and fix the law. If it doesn't, as president I will."

2. Good for Edwards. Have any other candidates spoken up about this?
Maybe those who are now in the senate can propose legislation which will protect these workers?

Likely? Only if health care workers contribute to their campaigns?

Come on Obama and Clinton people- where do your candidates stand?

5. The fact that Ginsberg, Stevens et al supported this decision
Indicates to me that this is an example of Congress failing, not the courts.

6. My Mom (now retired) was a home health aide for decades
I would hate for her to have to work under these conditions. Her working days are behind her. But plenty of others will get caught under the wheels of poverty because of this. Why single out home-care workers? It makes no sense to me. And what were the supposedly-liberal justices doing supporting this POS? :grr:

7. insurance companies AT LEAST ought to be subject
to minimum wage and overtime laws. uninsured people who have to pay out of pocket for these services might be hard pressed, but the premiums for long term disability are so huge, there is no excuse for them.
iirc, the seiu is organizing these workers. they are getting very involved in politics, from the local level, on up. they came out and worked in our aldermanic races here in chicago.
