Edwards Continues to Gain Support from LGBT Community
Edwards Continues to Gain Support from LGBT Community
John Edwards for President
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards' campaign to transform America continues to gain momentum in the LGBT community. Today, the campaign announced the support of several prominent community leaders from across the country. In April, the campaign announced the support of 25 national LGBT leaders, which can be read at http://www.johnedwards.com/news/press-releases/200700410-lgbt/.

"As a first-generation college graduate from rural North Carolina, I come from a similar background to Senator Edwards and believe he understands on a gut level issues of justice and equality" said New York based activist Kevin Jennings.

Northern California activists Jeff Soukup and Jeff Anderson said "We are proud to add our voices to the growing chorus of LGBT leaders from across the country who are enthusiastically endorsing John Edwards for president."

The LGBT leaders endorsing Edwards for president are:
*Kevin Jennings, New York LGBT Community Activist
*Jeffrey Davis, New York LGBT Community Activist, Managing Director of Lehman Brothers
*Gregory G. Simoncini, Commissioner of Illinois Human Rights Commission, former Board Member of National Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, former Board Member of Lambda Legal
*Stephen Handwerk, Board Member of National Stonewall Democrats and Co-Chair of Louisiana Stonewall Democrats.
*Jeff Anderson, former Co-Chair of John Kerry for President National LGBT Finance Committee
*Jeff Soukup, Board Member of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, former President and COO, PlanetOut Inc., and former Co-Chair National Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund
*Pam Cooke, Board Member of National Stonewall Democrats

8. I ditto Catchawave's
response - Just put JohnLocke on Ignore and then there is no need to get snide. I appreciate the posts JohnLocke makes - I spend a lot of time here and sometimes it's great to have what Edwards is saying, doing and proposing posted here. Find the candidate you support and reply to the post that pertains to them.

4. Thanks for not letting the anti-Democratic-candidate spammers stop you. I appreciate positive posts
about our great Democratic candidates even the ones who are not my top choice. All I think is "kick" when I read a trollish outburst from a loser naysayer who is freeperish enough to believe that a non-substantive slur against a candidate other than their first choice somehow benefits their chosen candidate. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Thanks again.

5. I find it difficult to believe that any gay groups support Edwards.
He can't even talk about them without stuttering and turning red

10. I agree and these are not orgs but individuals

he lost my support a few weeks ago - and then he does a press release about "gay activists" that support him - of which I recognize one - and I am a very active in GLBT politics and have been for years. Sounds like he's trying to create his own buzz.

12. Yeah, Seems Hard For Edwards
I think he's got that "ick factor" about homosexuality. But, he has a brain too. SO - his brain tells him there is no reason gays shouldn't have the same rights as heterosexuals, etc. even if something something inside him just cringes at the very thought. He's conflicted.

I bet a lot of Americans feel the same way he does.

13. If he could just bring himself to come out in support of complete civil rights for us
Edited on Wed Jun-13-07 05:13 AM by downstairsparts
The same rights as he and his wife enjoy and all straight people enjoy, then he might stand a chance of picking up broader LGBT support than just this handful of board members and "activists."

The same goes for the rest of the candidates, except for Kucinich, of course, who is the only one who sees gay people equal to straights. Which makes me wonder what's wrong with the rest of them, what's keeping them in the dark on this.
