Was the Aristide Quote on Tucker True?
They were talking about how Fred Thompson was the lobbyist for Haiti in 1991 and Tucker read this quote from Aristide. I don't know how many people here know about the US-backed coup of Haiti under the current President, but the info is there.

1. DU-ers covered the the coup extensively back when it happened
And we covered the (ultimately ineffectual) House investigation about it as it happened, too.

I don't know what quote you are referring to, however.

6. Necklacing? I remember that -- it's hideous....
It would be nice to know exactly what folksy ol' Fred had to say about the practice.

Hekate

> Necklacing ... refers to the practice of execution carried out by

> The same practice of extra-judicial lynching is found in the

9. That quote was debunked by the McLaughlin Group back in 1993
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 09:34 AM by slampoet
The Quote was translated by someone who spoke mainland French. (translation: White Person)

The media disseminated the false information and then finally enough people who know how to speak Haitian and other French Creoles (translation: Black people who the networks needed to hire to cover this story but didn't) called in CORRECTED THE NETWORKS ON WHAT WAS ACTUALLY BEING SAID.

What is going on in the speech is that he is talking about the smell of freedom being better that the smell of burning tires. In other words once we overcome those burning tires around our necks we will have better things to smell.

The reson this is being misquoted again is that is contains two things no republican seems to be able to understand. One is French Creole. The other is Metaphors.

(Fundamentalists read a book full of metaphors every week for their whole lives and don't understand it.)

In my apartment building we speak French, Canadian French, Spanish of three different kinds, Louisiana Creole, Portuguese, Cape Verdian Portugese, and Cajun in case anybody has a link and wants a fresh translation.

7. Was it anything like this?
Edited on Wed Jun-13-07 10:20 PM by LoZoccolo
"a faker who pretends to be one of our supporters . . . just grab him. Make sure he gets what he deserves . . . with the tool you have now in your hands, the `necklace.' . . . You have the right tool in your hands . . . the right instrument. . . . What a beautiful tool we have! What a nice instrument! It is nice, it is chic, it is classy, elegant, and snappy. It smells good, and wherever you go you want to smell it."

Yeah, I remember that.

10. This was all metphorical.

Read it in the original Creole and you will know.

This translation was made by someone who learned their French in Canada or France.

These words are not what was said in the actual Haitian language.
