Writer Maya Angelou Endorses Clinton
n a video released by the Clinton campaign, Angelou said of the New York senator: “I would encourage her to be a long-distance runner. Be in this thing to win.

She added: “You’ve got a lot of help and a lot of people care for you - not just admire you, but really have profound affection for you.”

Angelou, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1993, read her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at the presidential inauguration that same year.

2. Wow. I normally don't give much weight to "celebrity" endorsements,
but that one is impressive.

3. Because she became a celebrity by having a social gravitas in her works
not by being cute or blowing up stuff.

It impresses me, too.

7. uh-oh....Oprah must be thrown for a loop on this one
Remember, it was Oprah that was the real, initial push for Obama to get in the race. She begged him to run, pretty much implicitly giving him her endorsement several months before he made a final decision. It was after his appearance on Oprah that the pressure (and buzz) really started to take off for him.

12. I think it was a couple of years ago, Hillary was on Oprah, and
Oprah was begging her to run

That's why I thought it was weird when Oprah started touting Obama.

I guess she forgot

18. I think Oprah is friendly with Hillary and likes her
Hillary has been on the show several times, and I've seen pictures of them together at other events. Oprah has said that just because she's endorsing Obama doesn't mean that she doesn't like the other candidates.

17. I swear Oprah has moles on her staff that are trying to undo her..
The same thing happened with her book club, when she endorsed an author...with dubious credentials.

Someone on her staff is asleep at the wheel. I don't infer to judge Oprah to harshly, she has a good heart and a generous spirit. She's just gotten too big and has delegated too much authority to sloppy, at best, nefarious employees.

11. Angelou looks like she's getting a little frail. It made me feel a pang of grief
I've used some of her prose in class, and she's one of those writers whose words make you feel like you know them personally.

and elegant woman
