I mean, don't people want to support someone who really has a passion for the job? Who takes a stand on issues?

Why do repukes fall for someone just because he "sounds" (or should I say acts) presidential, and doesn't actually seem to have any burning desire to lead the country?

1. I think they are desperate. They don't have much to choose from and
we have a line-up of extraordinary experience, intelligence & brilliance.

2. Read Freeperville defenses of his laziness, and his apparent
lack of desire to actually campaign--they are desperately trying to spin this asshole into a reluctant but noble wise man who doesn't want to be prez to satisfy his ego, but rather he is called upon to serve because he's uniquely suited to lead us through these perilous times. Or other such complete and hilarious bullshit. As if a professional actor doesn't have a pathological need to feed his ego, any way he can.

3. You can see his political positions
here: http://www.issues2000.org/Fred_Thompson.htm

And with the election still 1.5 years away, why should the candidates of both parties already be campaigning? It's overkill.

6. Are those positions from 2000? I believe things have changed a bit since then.
and that isn't really what I was asking. But thanks for the link and welcome to DU. :hi:

7. Um, he is campaigning. That's why he's on Leno, giving speeches, etc.
I know all about his positions--he's a substanceless and sleazy career-lobbyist neocon assclown (with McCain's voting record, but without McCain's war heroism) who wouldn't even be considered if he wasn't an actor and the rest of the field wasn't so fucking weak.

5. Because wishy washy is better than the rest of the crew
who are running. Come on, do you really think that the religious right is going to warm to Guliani? Romney is a known flip-flopper and McCain has gone off the rails. Ron Paul and the others are in single digits, with Tancredo and the other Thompson polling lower than a generic "Other" candidate. So why not go with another actor? Maybe the repukes are hoping people will confuse FDT with the roles he's played--apparently those characters were more decisive than he is.

8. You know, I wondered about this also.
I think they have a hard time separating fantasy and reality.

After all, they still buy the cowboy image for junior. And they visualize cheney as a tough military guy. And those goombahs on Faux are intellectuals. And sean is a super-patriot. And pig-boy only has the country's best interest at heart. And guiliani is a family-oriented candidate. And Mitt is competent.

I really think they see fred as his Law and Order character.

11. They want to win.
And a successful actor with a Southern drawl is too much to just dismiss.
