Cornyn may face tough opponent in 2008 race (Lubbock Online)
Story last updated at 2:37 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007

Several Democrats are looking at a run for the nomination in 2008 to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

One who filed the paperwork to run June 1 and has already started raising money is wealthy plaintiff's attorney Mikal Watts, 39, of San Antonio.

Although Republicans have held every statewide office since 1998, Democrats are encouraged by dissatisfaction with President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war and a lot more. A recent Washington Post poll showed almost 60 percent of Americans think Bush's sending additional troops to Iraq has made no difference, and 73 percent say the country is on the wrong track.

Cornyn, especially in his first three or four years, has been almost like Bush's shadow on most issues, though not all. ~snip~

1. I would welcome almost anyone to replace Cornyn.
Cornyn is a follower, not a leader. He was elected by a rubber stamp after Bush.

5. A useless, but delicious, observation of Cornyn by a WWII vet....
We were at an event, Cornyn was there, several people in our group (NOT me, however!) shook his hand, including a WWII veteran in our group--who went through h*ll in the island-hopping campaign of the Pacific theater. Afterward, the vet kept shaking his head (in disgust?) and muttering that Cornyn had the SOFTEST hands, that he'd never encountered such soft hands in a man.

Does this indicate our Dear Senator has never done any useful work?

4. Cornyn is not the Lone Ranger.
The Republicans have 21 Senators up in 2008 and many are vulnerable. There are only 12 Democrats up and most are safe. 2008 will be a good year for the Democratic Party in the Senate. One of the effects of a stronger Democratic presence in the next Senate will be the marginalization of Lieberman.

Texas now has a 52 percent minority population, concentrated in the younger percentiles. In the years immediately ahead, it will cease to be a Republican stronghold and become Democratic (again.)
