White House aides' e-mail records gone

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
22 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - E-mail records are missing for 51 of the 88 White
House officials who had electronic message accounts with the
Republican National Committee, the House Oversight Committee said
Monday.

The Bush administration may have committed "extensive" violations
of a law requiring that certain records be preserved, said the
committee's Democratic chairman, adding that the panel will deepen
its probe into the use of political e-mail accounts.

The committee's interim report said the number of White House
officials who had RNC e-mail accounts, and the number of messages
they sent and received, were more extensive than previously realized.

The administration has said that about 50 White House officials had
RNC e-mail accounts during Bush's presidency. But the House committee
found at least 88.

1. I know plenty of people who can "find" them
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 02:58 PM by Capn Sunshine
We all know this is a meaningless lie. There are way to many email servers to try to destroy the hard drives of all of them.

What I wonder is, why don't they call them on this specious crap?
I only hope they are giving them enough rope.

3. I have no technical expertise in this subject whatsoever but
its hard for me to believe that emails are lost, never to be found again.

9. Emails are only stored on server at a time
I suspect the RNC would have one big-ass email server (or cluster) for everybody, at least in that area.

So where are the backups?

13. also they used a system outside the government system
so Homeland Security probably also had its hand in, they were outside the official gov servers and were sending e-mails to gov offices like the DOJ.

18. exactly
I can't see them undertaking the chaos and disruption killing all the RNC email servers would take.

They are between a rock and a hard place:
give up the e-mails and risk multiple prosecutions, or kill the entire RNC server farm and its subs and risk complete chaos for six months?

6. Yep, that's the key to this getting blown out.
If enough of the MSM catch on to it, Dennis may actually get some support for his impeachment bill after all.

7. And yet, they have no problem keeping illegal records on all of us
They collected and maintain illegal records on tens of thousands of unsuspecting Americans.

Yet when it comes to keeping track of their own e-mails? Poof! Oops! Fat fingered it. So sorry...

Selective incompetence?

Yea, right.

14. This whole emails being deleted thing is total bull shit
IF they really wanted to get those emails, there are backups and most email systems have a method to retrieve emails that have been deleted.
I guarantee you there are backup tapes of those emails from some server somewhere. They are just selling Congress and the American people a total load of shit and everyone is buying it.

Demand they retrieve those tape and restore those emails and provide them to Congress NOW!

Then we can proceed with prosecution and Impeachment.

So, it's possible that old data is no longer available...

21. All backup procedures have a retention policy that keeps an archive
I have been involved with backup procedures and there is always one tape held in every period that has a cumulation of all the information through the previous period.

19. Have none of these people heard of Post-It notes?
That's what you use when you don't want your musings permanently recorded.

I'm grateful these dolts have the hubris to record their machinations. Just as Nixon's recordings of all WH conversations were his downfall, those "missing" e-mails are going to come back and bite BushCo in the fundament. I'm already stocking up on fireworks for the celebration.
