Rare tactic may allow immigration votes

By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS, Associated Press Writer
Mon Jun 18, 7:29 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Only in the arcane world of the U.S.
Senate could a quirky gambit known as a "clay pigeon"
make the difference between passage of an important
immigration measure and its death at the hands of
opponents.

Democratic leaders hope the complex maneuver — which
makes use of the Senate's labyrinthine rules to insist
on votes on amendments — will frustrate conservatives'
attempts to derail the embattled immigration bill,
instead putting it on a fast track to passage next week.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would revive
the bill to legalize as many as 12 million unlawful
immigrants late this week. To do so, though, he needs
backing from 60 senators, and a way to guarantee votes
on a tentative list of 22 Republican and Democratic
amendments whose consideration is seen as vital to
satisfying key waverers.

The so-called clay pigeon is how he's expected to do it,
under a strategy that was still taking shape Monday.

1. It's be nice if he'd put this kind of creative resourcefulness to work
on getting IMPEACHMENT off the ground.

After all this, even just the crap today - the rovian rnc email connection et al, SURELY by now they have enough to start talking about it, at least.

2. Of all the #%@$!ng bills to use a trick to pass they choose this one. They are really trying to lose
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 02:54 AM by w4rma
in 2008 aren't they? This bill is nothing but corruption and an attempt to drive down wages and salaries for regular Americans.

Reid is on my $#!% list now.

3. So, we expected these dems to save us from enternal war and the
looting of the Treasury, to reign in this administration. And what do we get? A bunch of worthless hearings, a secret trade deal with the bush** admin, more money handed to the warmongers on a silver platter (not strings attached mind you).

And what do these clowns come up with. A scheme to pass legislation that the majority of the country is against and that's already failed once.

What a joke.

4. These people are not working for us.
We vote them in ... but they work for themselves.

6. It will take awhile, but how about we choose to Vote the Bums OUT?
That is, vote for their next democratic challenger regardless of the blessed incumbent's seniority - ORGANIZE with http://moveon.org. and http://voidnow.org

TERM LIMITS too!

These smarmy corporate whores masquerading as Democratic Representatives in OUR Congress need to be reminded that they work for THE PEOPLE not THEIR STOCK PORTFOLIO! :grr:

7. Don't forget that Kennedy will have to be Number 1 on the list
of Bums to vote out since he sponsored the bill. You can call him lots of names (most of them nice ;) ), but Corporate whore is not one of them. He could win reelection in Massachusetts without spending a nickel, so he is supporting this bill out of his core beliefs, not to serve his "masters."

9. There are other "good people" who'd be happy to serve 6 years and out.
That's the problem: Serving in OUR Congress should NOT be a career pursuit but a gift of your experience and talent to "the public good."

I'm done with Dynasties of all kinds.

As much as I admire MOST of what Ted Kennedy has done in the Senate, there's no doubt that those with wealth and connections get by with *misbehavior* that would put the rest of us in jail for a very, very, very long time. Don't jump on me about Ted because I forgive him and that situation is over. But look at his Nephew's problems lately? The rest of us would have been smartly carted off to jail.

I want a country where EVERY American is treated fairly under the law and Members of Congress serve, at the most 6 years, no lobbyists and federally funded elections. We may never fully realize the foregoing, but that would be ONE excellent start at regaining our beloved Democratic Republic.
