What is the Congressional outlook for 2008? |
|
We're all so focused on the presidency, I haven't been paying much attention to what analysts are saying Congress might look like. Anyone have any info?
If we win the presidency I'll be thrilled. If we don't, I want to make sure we keep or expand our Congressional majority to keep these psychos in check for the following four years.

EVery one. Then we can begin to bring our country back to the company of civilized nations.

2. we'll have a better view of it in the fall... but, in my opinion, this will come down to each |

individual race, and may not be part of a tide like 06. So far it looks like we'll keep the House, I think, the Senate may end up with no change in partisan numbers, or could go red by a couple votes.

3. I'm cautiously optimistic |
|
There are more Republican senators than Democratic senators up for reelection. None of the Democratic incumbents appear to be in trouble--Mary Landrieu might have been, but Karl Rove has had trouble finding a major league candidate. On the House side, we'll have to play a lot of defense, as Republicans did in 1996. The toughest races will be Lampson in Texas, Mahoney in Florida and Boyda in Kansas. Jim Marshall in Georgia will have a tough race, if he even runs again, as he may run for the Senate, in which case his House seat is as good as gone. John Barrow in Georgia will also have a tough race. On the other hand, we can go on offense against John Doolittle in California, Rick Renzi in Arizona, Heather Wilson in New Mexico, Chris Shays in Connecticut, Peter Roskam in Illinois (we need Tammy Duckworth to run again!), Mean Jean Schmidt in Ohio, Robin Hayes in North Carolina and possibly Michelle Backman in Minnesota.
One thing we forget amidst all of our well-justified outrage over last month' capitulation on the War bill, is that Republicans are just as angry with their party over the immigration bill. But any more sellouts like the one last month and we may have a problem.

5. I think the Dems are starting to get it through their heads that |
|
they can't keep doing that. It seems like there's a lot of tough talk from them lately, like it finally sunk in that they can't keep being pussycats.
Time will tell though. Actions speak louder than words. I myself feel fairly confident we'll keep the house. The Senate seems like a coin toss at this point.
