Video of Howard Dean at TBA...closing rally.
It looks to be about 25 or so minutes long. I am watching now, and something he said really resonated with me.

He said

we won't be in power very long unless we understand that we have to regard ourselves as a party and a group, and not a group of individuals running for office. This is bigger than any individual Democratic candidate.

Some comments from lindab at the blog, one of the organizers.

"Howard was the very last speaker at the TBA conf. and he was a hit.
As we waited for him to be introduced I stood up from my seat in the front row. I looked between the speakers and there was Howard talking to someone. He looked around at me and I waved. He gave me a big Howard smile and said 'Hello". When he came to the podium, he was met with a 5 minute standing ovation.

As every one sat down I yelled "we love you Howard". Over half the audience piped in the same.

Howards message was about morality. That no matter what you are "republican or democrats". Morals should be the same."

2. Very outraged, raised voice over possible deportation of Jimenez's wife.
He says America does not do things like that.

Mentions the scapegoating of immigrants.

Passionate.

Says unionize legal immigrants and it won't depress American wages.

Tactical errors on our side in handling Iraq war funding. He begs us not to not give in to disappointment if they don't succeed by Sept. Reminds us that the 08 candidates have promised to get us out. In an interview in VT the other day he we were outmaneuvered by the GOP but that we are learning quickly. In the VT interview he said it was a learning curve for a party so long out of power. God, that man has patience.

3. Interesting comment.
"Our nation was captured by a small fringe of ideologues who mean America harm. They put their own interest above the interest of the nation."

5. How true
Howard has been repeating this theme for months: we should not cede moral issues to the wingnuts; we actually are the moral ones, and certainly the Democratic Party's core values are close to Jesus' teachings than those of the hateful right wing.

Then I hear from someone in HRC's campaign and I wonder.

6. He's getting very skilled at getting the idea across.
I can listen to him and to the minister on State of Belief, Welton Gaddy...and I almost forgot my anger with the Southern Baptist Church.

Did you notice Howard spoke about that church, but tactfully?

He told about the 3 weeks the DNC gave off for any who wanted to work for the Katrina victims. Two of the DNC ladies were teamed with SBC women. They were almost afraid to tell them they were Democrats, but in the end they worked well together.

He said that it meant each would remember the good parts of it.

I wish I had his pragmatism and patience in getting ideas across. Heck, I am just now able to communicate with some of my family who were so sure Bush would never lie.

8. Excellent speech, which I think really highlights the core values of the Democratic Party
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 02:04 AM by ProgressiveAmPatriot
For anyone who is interested, many of the ideas for his framing came from George Lakoff. This is a must read for any progressive: http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/thinkingpoints

As Dean outlined, we need to talk to voters about our progressive values, like fairness, strength with intelligence, and fiscal responsibility. This is bigger than any one candidate and is more important than putting the Democratic Party in power. It is about restoring the fundamental values which unite Americans (and also happen to be progressive values, Dean is a politician after all). As Dean said in his speech, elections are two way now. Politicians can either listen to what the American people want and get elected or they can try and manipulate people. As Dean put it, the Republicans may win by dividing America but they destroy America in the process. 50 states is a reality for any progressive 2008 hopeful who campaigns as Dean suggests. However, I agree with Dean that looking past 08 the legislation that will result from progressive victories will not come from any one candidate, but from our core progressive values. I think the policies Dean advocated will be put in place in any Democratic administration with decent majorities in Congress.

9. Yes, you are right.
Dean started working with Lakoff's techniques at the DFA before he was chairman of the DNC. He wrote the forward for Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant. He's got his work cut out keeping people on board for 08 with a timid congress.

12. I love Lakoff, I've basically decided that anyone who hasn't read Lakoff doesn't know what they are
talking about. Don't Think of An Elephant is a great book to. I linked to Thinking Points because it is free online. My favorite of his is Whose Freedom?
