Ukrops grocery store -- another IMHO crazy fundie organization
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 12:16 PM by wakeme2008
For over a year the people of Roanoke have been waiting for Ukrops to finally open their store. This will happen next week. So today I went to the Roanoke Web site for Ukrops http://www.ukrops.com/roanoke/default.asp and was shocked to see a "grocery store" pushing a Vacation Bible School.

Interesting I tried to email them

I do not shop at C r a z y F u n di e s Stores and when I saw the Vacation Bible School promo on your Roanoke store web page, that will stop me from shopping there.

1. It looks like Ukrop himself is the fundie
however I know some very nice people who describe themselves as fundies. I also know the typically nasty fundies who manage to do outreach programs in Mexico, digging wells and building schools and irrigation setups and really improving the lives of people who have nothing.

Good people are allowed to be wrong. Even me.

I would go to that store and judge it by the way I am treated. If I am treated to religious harangues, I'll go elsewhere. If it's a nice store with a good selection, I'll shop there.

I do prefer unionized stores, but those aren't always available in the south.

2. well, if you click on it
you'll see that it is an offer to donate snacks & other things to churchs sponsoring vacation bible schools. There doesn't seem to be any limitation, ie, that they'll only donate goodies to fundie churches & not to liberal-leaning ones.

6. If you read the link, your "Church" has to be approved
That suggests to me that not all will be approved.

4. Ha, the "helpline" FAILED!!! Some help!
I'm guessing they're pandering. Richmond, the Pat Robertson crowd, that kind of thing. Or maybe the owner is a dyed in the wool fundie....

You'd shit at how those stupid VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS are shopped about on military installations. And a lot of secular military parents would use them as cheapo babysitters...

light the rope on fire. Unless you accept JEEEEEEEEEEEE...zuss!!! as your Lord And Savior, they won't put an air mattress under ya to break your fall!!!!

8. Ukrops was still one of the only stores to be closed on Sunday.
When my daughter lived in Richmond, she shopped there but on Sunday, had to go somewhere else. I believe their policy is not new. They are not johnny-come-lately on this matter.

I have no reason to criticize their stand on the open Sunday position but do question the fact that they peddle the bible school from their web site.

9. This is the kind of thing we each need to decide for ourselves
Do we shop at such a store or not?

I'm right there where you are, wakeme. They'd never get a nickel from me. I can't criticize anyone who chooses to shop there, but I know it isn't for me.

10. Wow, you would starve out here in the Midwest
Virtually every store hangs posters for VBS, among other things. It is called community service:shrug: In addition, a number of very nice, though very religious people run some pretty non-traditional businesses, from organic farms to coffee shops. Some discreetly advertise their faith, others don't. I don't necessarily choose whom I patronize based on their religious affiliation. I get my coffee from Muslims, and my heirloom organic seeds for my garden from a serious Christian. Both offer me a product that I want, at a price that I like, and give very nice, friendly service. If these criteria are met, then I really don't give a damn what their religion is:shrug:
