Obama table in Madison: June 23 Edition
Here's a brief report on the Obama table at the Dane County Farmers Market in Madison, WI on Saturday.

The day started off with a bang.

Arriving at the location where the table is set up, a man was sitting there eating a couple donuts and sipping his coffee. That happens sometimes and after politely asking people to move to a nearby location so we can set up, they usually nod and move like decent folks. Not this guy. I asked him to just scoot over a little so we can set up and he said "why? for what?" I said we have a table that we set up for Barack Obama supporters and need to set it up now. "No way! I'm going to sit here and finish my breakfast! This is Madison and the capitol grounds are for us taxpayers! You can't make me move!" "Ok, then I'll show you the permit", I said. Grabbing the permit with the map showing the spot, I showed it to him. He yelled "how do I know that's official! It could be something you made up!". Ok. There just happened to be a Farmers Market official about 10 yards away doing a tour. I walked over and told him what was happening. He gave me the number of the Capitol Police. I walked over to the donut nut and called the number on my cell phone. "Yes, Capitol Police. Hello, I have a problem with someone who will not move off of a spot that I have a permit for." Suddenly, the fat guy struggled up and skimpered away. I told them that the problem was solved.

We had 200 people sign up for emails from all over the country. We went through 100 buttons and 50 bumper stickers and a number of Avery label sheets of Obama stickers.

One woman walked up and said that she wanted to sign up but didn't want her husband to see her. I politely asked if her husband was a Republican. She laughed and said he was and that she was also a Republican. "I really like him", she said as she grabbed a button.

A few people wanted to talk about how much they don't like Senator Clinton, but I would just say that we need to focus on the positive and support Obama instead of just jabbing at her or other candidates.

A couple people really like Richardson, but wanted Obama to win. There were a few people who liked the idea of a Obama/Richardson ticket. There are always at least a couple people who want Obama/Feingold as well.

One kid, about 15 and wearing NY Yankee merch, walked up and asked where the "Rudy" table was. I spotted his dad nearby waiting for an answer. I said that Rudy's table was in the Madison Zoo in the monkey section. Talk to the third monkey on the right. The kid laughed. When he walked back to his dad, I could see his dad give me the dirty stare. I picked up an Obama sticker and hand gestured if he wanted one. They walked away.

A very funny moment happened when I was talking about some of the 911 controversies like the falling of Building 7 when someone I was with said "if that happened, I don't want to be an American". Just as he said that, some Freeper walked by and apparently only overheard "...I don't want to be an American..." He yelled "Y'all better jus' move to California! Move to California!" Yuck, yuck, yuck...

No matter who your preferred candidate is, I would highly recommend doing tabling for your candidate out in the wide open with others. There is nothing like interacting with people politically outside in the real world.

I am south of you in Rockford, IL. Madison is my fav place to go. Love the downtown and walking around. good times.
I am hoping to get up there in a few weeks and I'll stop by and say hello.

2. That would be a blast...
Also, there was a woman who wants to start something up in Janesville, perhaps a fundraiser party. I'll keep you posted.

7. Thanks flpoljunkie
It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I've been taking some video and photos and hope to ake some kind of mini-documentary of this season at the Farmers Market, which lasts until late October.

10. Next weekend, I'm going to be in New Orleans
I plan on doing some Obama stuff there as well as am doing some film work on the Katrina story. I'm bracing myself for some possibly horrible stories.

11. I might want to do this for my candidate.....
Any advice?

How did you originally go about getting the supplies (campaign paraphenelia - - buttons, fliers, stickers, etc?) for Obama when you do tabling? Is there a local Obama campaign headquarters you've been in contact with?

How did you decide upon choosing the Madison Farmers' Market as your particular spot/locale for tabling?

Former Wisconsin resident here, BTW. :)

12. I'd recommend this first
- Go to www.barackobama.com

- Sign up for mybarackobama.com

- You'll be able to see who is doing things near your zipcode by searching that way

If it's another candidate, their site may have similar online tools.

Madison Farmers' Market, as you may know, gets about 10,000 people or more on Saturday and there is a political table section. I applied for a free permit last spring. There may be a similar venue where you are that probably has a spot to table.

As for contacting the Obama campaign and/or getting materials, I've printed out signup sheets, some signs and Avery labels of the Obama logo, have purchased some signage and stickers online and others have contributed. We now have an official Obama campaign person in contact with us that we send signup sheets that we made to her.

It's basically the idea to not wait for the Cavalry to arrive. That's what so cool about volunteer grassroots.
