2. OK, but why?
Can we possibly be any more shallow?

Is Hillary ahead because she played "blame the victim" at the Take Back America conference? Because America loves Celine Dion? Because we're still fuming about Edwards' haircut or angry that we haven't seen Obama in his swim trunks recently?

3. Obama's negatives are rising pretty rapidly in this poll...
Up to 44% negative opinion, and 40% won't vote for...

13. Which is not far from HRC...
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 09:13 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
BO's will grow more than HRC's. HRC has been attacked by repukes since 1992; Obama has never faced any real right-wing attacks (aside from the brief madrasa story) and has only faced media scrutiny for a grand total of 2 weeks. HRC's unfavorables will more or less stay the same; Obama's should continue to rise.

Remember what BO supporters used to say about HRC's high unfavorables? ;)

5. i am starting to lean toward hillary now
I have been waiting and waiting. I watched the debates and they really helped me decide in a way. Of course, we have half a year till the primaries, but I think Hillary has my vote. Obama impresses me when he is alone and talking to people, but he has really disappointed me in the debates. If he really wanted to be president, he should be more versed in international policies and such and be able to wipe the floor with everyone of them. I feel like he has been forced on us as a "chosen one" of the democratic party, like he is the second coming. I know he will be a fantastic President, i just don't see it now. Edwards lost my vote when i saw him at the Jefferson/Jackson dinner in Atlanta. I am just tired of the same rhetoric and I feel Obama has become a typical washington politician. Hillary though has impressed me in the debates, she is likable and actually excited me. Yes there are questions i still have, but I think she has the most knowledge and respect to get the job done. I think she is also a very tough woman which i love. We are in serious times we need serious people (stealing a quote from Sorkin's American President). All of this is null and void if Gore runs, I would jump on that wagon so quick! I just think Hillary can do it. :)

9. Yes, but what about actual issues?
  • Hillary voted to give a sociopath a blank check in Iraq and seems unwilling to admit she made a mistake. Many of us railed against the ramp up to war and deplored Congress's abandonment of its Constitutional imperative. Why did she vote yes? Why did we know more than she did? Why won't she admit she was wrong? Does she think she's still right???
  • Hillary supports the death penalty. I vehemently oppose it, as does much of the civilized world.
  • Hillary sought to squelch a Constitutional amendment prohibiting flag burning by actually co-sponsoring a bill that criminalized it! Congress and the Courts have no business restricting such a rare symbolic demonstration of free speech.
  • After championing an ambitious but complex health care initiative during her husband's presidency, Hillary is now a top recipient of money from the health care industry. I join most of the civilized world in opposing half-baked plans from Clinton, Obama, and others, and supporting a sane, single-payer health system that takes the avaricious insurance companies out of the loop.

    14. Actually, that's not true. Read it carefully

The site you cite is normally quite good. I wish more people read it instead of following each poll.
However, characterizing her as "Strongly Opposed" to the death penalty is quite misleading. Frankly, it's causing me to re-evaluate this site.

Its sole criteria is that she supports DNA testing for all federal executions. Which is hardly the same thing as strongly opposing the death penalty. In fact, it's not even close.

Russ Feingold Stands Alone Against Death Penalty
    ...

Feingold has introduced S.447, the Federal Death Penalty Abolition Act of 2007. The legislation would, if passed in to law, do what the title suggests. It would abolish the federal death penalty.

It has been a month and a half (this was posted in March) since Senator Feingold brought the Federal Death Penalty Abolition Act to the floor of the Senate. Yet, in all that time, not one other senator has given a co-sponsorship to the bill. No other member of the United States Senate has taken a serious stand against the death penalty.

That includes the four Democratic US senators who are running for President:

    Joseph Biden
    Hillary Clinton
    Christopher Dodd
    Barack Obama

Not one of these senators opposes the death penalty. They may talk, hypothetically, about the shortcomings of capital punishment. When they have the opportunity to act, however, they do nothing.

Nat Hentoff: Hillary and the Death Penalty

Hillary Rodham Clinton, like her husband, is an unbending supporter of capital punishment. And no administration in our history has done more to speed executions.

I'm not afraid of the truth. American foreign policy, Democratic and Republican, is alarmingly unilateral. (That's why my party is tacitly joining with that maniac's party to ensure continued occupation of Iraq.) That said, there are some differences. Here's an example. After that, do your own homework

On strengthening the embargo against Cuba

    Clinton says YES
    Dodd says NO
Edwards says target Castro, not Cubans
Gore (not voting, of course) supports keeping sanctions
    Kerry voted NO
Al Sharpton says NO. We deal with China; let's deal with Cuba
Kucinich voted YES until political prisoners are released
Wesley Clark says NO. Embargoes don't work in Cuba or other dictatorships

(By the way, Mario's speech at the 1992 DNC was one of my all-time favorites. Truly. I just wish he hadn't waffled for so long about entering the race. I would've supported him 100 percent.)
