It reads like an attempt to shut down discussion of racism by acting like it doesn't exist. Words exist in a personal AND a cultural context. Using the n word, or the fag word, or the b word at an individual is a personal insult, yes, but that doesn't erase the political and historical meanings of those words in our society.

Women have left DU because it feels like a hostile environment to them, because of the nonstop use of language like that, and including that. I wasn't involved in the bitter debate over the use of that word on DU, but there is a lot of anger over that word still being acceptable here as a slur. It's not really a debatable thing at this point that some women (not all, but some) are strongly offended by it.

Knowing that its use has driven other women off the forum, knowing that there are women (not just me) that object strongly to it, why defend it? That's the reality - the continual slurs against women have created an environment here where some women are no longer participating. In an office environment, if this language was used despite continual requests to stop, the women who were driven away would likely have a winnable lawsuit. Now this isn't an office, it's a private forum, so that's not a concern, obviously. But if you think about using that language in an office, it should be pretty clear that it's offensive language.

If you don't care about that, about women leaving because of the gendered slurs and disrespect shown toward women here, then I can understand you opting not to spend your time discussing it. We all prioritize things differently. But why go out of your way to either use it or post to defend its use?
