For Progressives, Gore's the One in 2008

In recent days, the word used more and more frequently to describe Hillary Clinton's march to the Democratic presidential nomination has been "inevitable." She consistently leads public opinion polls across the country by a good 10 points over her nearest rival. Hollywood, after a brief infatuation with Barack Obama, is now, according to the Los Angeles Times, consolidating its support behind the junior senator from New York. Rupert Murdoch employee Peter Chernin extracted a cool $850,000 from wealthy Angelenos for the former first lady at a recent event in his home. A few days later, she was endorsed by the King of Hollywood himself -- Steven Spielberg.

I wonder if Mr. Spielberg will change his mind when Al Gore declares his candidacy this fall.

I have never met Mr. Gore. I make no claim to any inside knowledge on this question. I have no idea whether he's gaining or losing weight.

But I think he's coming.

I think he's going to find it impossible to resist.

And I think progressives should get busy, right now, working to hasten the day.....(snip)

The majority of my Democratic friends have devoted most of their attentions to the three avowed front-runners -- Clinton, Obama, and John Edwards. Yet during the last six months or so, whenever I've asked them whom they would choose if they were choosing between four candidates -- Clinton, Obama, Edwards, and Al Gore -- probably 90 percent have told me, in a heartbeat, that they'd go for Gore.

1. I'm a proud liberal leftie!
Yes, that might include the word progressive,
but I'm not a coward who needs the word
progressive to mitigate against the word
liberal.

8. Personally, I use the word "progressive"
as a deliberate tribute to Bob LaFollette.

2. Gore could definitely win the nomination
If Al Gore would announce himself as a candidate, within about 10 days he would be leading the field.

I think that Gore is keeping his options open. Hasn't made up his mind yet what he will do.

If you ask me - I think Gore-Obama would be the strongest ticket in 2008.

The best thing we can do right now is organize our own Live Earth House Parties on July 7th.

By getting behind Al Gore's current work, we can make it more likely that he will decide to run.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

Visit Al's site www.algore.com and read his blog http://blog.algore.com

Get ready for Live Earth on 7/7/07: www.liveearth.org

Sign the petitions at www.algore.org and www.draftgore.com

4. I agree that Al is the ONE. I have decided to do a small House Party.
Join me and do one in your neighborhood. That is certainly a way to make Gore's project a success...for himself and the earth.

on edit: fwiw, evlbstrd is having a July 3rd barbeque/Al Gore meetup at his house (in KC). We've been having Gore meetups since last year.

11. What time are you having your house party? And, what medium are you
using to show the live music? I'm asking because I signed up to host a house party at a local restaurant and had a hard time trying to figure out what time to have the guest arrive and how or what to show as we only have a TV. I decided to show the NBC prime time recap and live excerpts from 8 to 11.

12. One of the KC DFA groups is having a watch party
They're the ones organizing the watch party. As I understand it, the event will be held at a public facility they will stream live it via the internet and we'll be able to watch it on Sundance. My husband is the one that knows the details on the Live Earth stuff (but I think it is going to be held in the Westport district in one of our favorite watering holes). fwiw, we've got some pretty active DFA chapters in Kansas that do events monthly. They have contacts with a number of venues in and around KC because they've been so active.

Personally, we just exchanged the cable box in the living room for a cable box/DVR. We'll be recording the 22 hour Sundance feed and the NBC coverage. If need be, we've got the DVR in the office that we can set up to record any other coverage available to us.

Otherwise we just hold good old-fashioned Draft Gore meetups at least once a month. In April the KC and Lawrence Draft Gore chapters went on a field trip to visit with members of the Ames and Cedar Rapid chapters. The KC and Lawrence Draft Gore chapters also manned the table for AlGore.org at the Take Back America conference in D.C. We get around.

9. Great article, good analysis
I agree with much of what Daly says especially when he talks about those of us who keep getting left behind. The so-called center has been moved so far rightward that the many on the left feel disenfranchised and don't bother to vote. The GOP and media have made presidential elections little more than dog and pony shows that focus on the talking heads' personal opinions or divisive issues and less on what the candidates are saying. It's no wonder there are so many apathetic people who don't vote or pay attention.

13. That is who I am waiting for...

...otherwise, I am totally not inspired by any of these people, at least the ones at the top of the ticket.

Gore gets in, I get fired up.

go door to door for Gore. Hey, that's a good slogan:"I'd go door to door for Gore!"
