"Liberal Media" my ass -- "Edwards cashes in on Coulter remarks"
This headline (from the AP) jumped out at me when I opened my newspaper this morning: Edwards cashes in on Coulter remarks

By Nedra Pickler - Associated Press Writer
June 28, 2007

Washington — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Wednesday encouraged his supporters to donate to his campaign in response to “hateful” comments from conservative author Ann Coulter.

Coulter’s latest attack on Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is spurring financial contributions from his supporters. Edwards made his first comments to The Associated Press in response to Coulter’s suggestion that she wished he would be “killed in a terrorist assassination plot.” His campaign cited her remarks in two e-mails and a telephone text message to supporters for donations, with the fundraising deadline on Saturday.

It’s not the first time Coulter has given the Edwards campaign a financial boost. In March, she called Edwards a “faggot” and the campaign used video of the comment to help raise $300,000 before the end of the first quarter.

In the e-mails, the campaign asked supporters to send donations to defy her remarks and help Edwards meet his goal of raising $9 million in the second quarter. The first e-mail from campaign adviser Joe Trippi showed a clip of Coulter on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” where she made the comments Monday.

In answering criticism of her March speech, Coulter referred to comedian Bill Maher’s suggestion, also in March, that “people wouldn’t be dying needlessly” if Vice President Dick Cheney had been killed when terrorists launched an attack as he visited Afghanistan. She contends that Maher — whose comment about Cheney drew little attention — was not joking. “So I’ve learned my lesson,” she said on the ABC program. “If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”

I love :sarcasm: the way this story is spun to make the Edwards look like money-grubbers, rather than showing Coulter to be the asshole she is. Also, note the quotation marks around the word hateful in the first paragraph.

Aarrgghhh! No wonder so many Americans are confused about who the bad guys are in the weird political drama going on in our country these days.

Thank you Associated Press. Way to go! :wtf:

1. Well, if the creature calling herself Coulter wants to attack
Then there is no reason the Edwards campaign shouldn't reap some benefits. See, if the coulter creature would just SHUT UP then the Edwards campaign likely wouldn't be as well off as they are. Yeah, why not cash in? But yes, the AP probably should have framed it differently.

3. On NBC Today show David Gregory asked Elizabeth Edwards
about the "timing" of her comments just as the quarter closes. Her excellent reply was that it was not her timing of when Coulter would appear on Matthews.

In reality, both Matthews and Coulter used this as a promotional event.

14. In reality, the letters from Trippi predated the Mathews event
If there was promotion being done, both sides did it.

5. Yet it's true
There is thread after thread after thread here on DU raising Coulter Cash for the Edwards campaign. I commended Elizabeth for speaking out to the whore, but making money off it took it from the personal, which was effectively above criticism, and the general tone of politics, which was also effective, to the political primary campaigning, where the worms are in the can with you. This is something the campaign decided to do. It is open to various interpretations, the AP article and "money-grubbing" being one of them. I hope they expected this spin and are ready to respond appropriately, but they brought this on themselves, not by the Coulter encounter itself, but by turning that into an ATM.

9. They got $25 from my ATM
Well not really but from my ATM card?

It's the height of hypocrisy for the press to call it money grubbing, and then what words do they use to describe the discreet big PAC contributions to the other candidates?

The front runners get donations from PACs, whereas Edwards is "money grubbing" from individuals. sickening, predictable, right wing AP spin. Frank Luntz would be proud of the Pickler's dishonest framing.

The disgusting behavior of MSNBC and Chris Matthews prompted me to put my money where my hopes are. :patriot:

10. The same reason why we raised Thank You Dollars and Flowers
for Feingold, Boxer, Helen Thomas, etc. If you don't like it, or agree with it, don't participate

11. None of whom are running for president
I commented on the political ramifications, not the emotional value to supporters. I'll participate, however, when and where I please.

15. Of all people, you should understand
"rallying the troops". Nobody's questioning you who and how you support.

I got PAC fundraiser emails from Boxer and Feingold today.....to send a message to the media. What's that all about?

It's politics, the only sport spectators "can" participate in (thank you Craig Crawford).

8. Yes, MSNBC reported that both will benefit,
Coulter will see an increase in book sales, and John Edwards will raise big bucks from the encounter.

13. Red meat vs red meat - Coulter was sinking into oblivion - but now she's news again
And we're supposed to get outraged all over again and help her poor little victim meet his second quarter fundraising quota to make the booboo go away...
By a campaign that has been turning personal issues into cash since its inception.
