Why did Elizabeth Edwards lower herself to calling in to talk to Coulter?
Coulter isn't a politician. She's just a loud-mouth liar who thrives on controversy. Mrs. Obama could've just as easily called in to ask Coulter to stop implying Barack is a terrorist or to ask why she always refers to him as "B. Hussein Obama." I just think getting in the mud with Coulter lowers the Edwards' profile.

1. Perhaps. OTOH,
...there is something to be said for standing up to bullies.

7. True...
but did she really think Coulter would say ok to stopping any personal attacks? When Coulter wrongly accused Elizabeth of wanting her to stop writing books and columns, and she said she won't do that, Coulter DID have a point: If she stopped with the personal attacks she'd have nothing left to say.

2. I think it's way overdue that someone puts that woman in her place.
Keeping your mouth shut and remaining quiet is not the way to handle it any longer. I think we all learned that from the 2004 elections.

I'm glad Elizabeth stood up to the parasite. And she did it with respect and class, two things Coulter wouldn't know if they bit her on the ass.

10. That's true, too...
but the Swiftboat liars were putting out commercials doing damage to Kerry's reputation. He NEEDED to stand up to them and he didn't. But giving Coulter any credibility seems a little different. I can understand your point, though.

3. She's exposing her for the psyhco she is
Even right wingers are on her ass now - which is the first step to making her go away.

Just because Mrs. Obama didn't say anything doesn't mean Mrs Edwards wasn't justified in doing so.

12. Everyone knows what a physcho she is...
I'm not sure Elizabeth calling in was the best way to handle it. But it DID make her look classy, cool, and collected while Coulter looked like the cold-hearted dodger she is.

19. New right-wing talking point: "Only liberals buy Coulter's books."
Obviously, it's not true, but the fact they're saying it demonstrates they feel the need to distance themselves from this harpy.

5. No way Jose!
Remember when Bill Clinton stood up to Chris wallace's insults on Foxx? That I think was the catalyst for the Dem takeover of Congress. I wish the "Dem Leaders For Change" in the Congress had the balls Elizabeth has. (Ms Edwards: please excuse my anatomically-incorrect terminology, but I just had to say it).

I have heard a rant like that before. From people with diagnosed personality disorders.

She's a sociopath. Bottled in bond.

Elizabeth Edwards is twice the woman that venom-spewing, publicity-craving skeleton is.

11. I'm very proud that Elizabeth Edwards stood up to the nasty woman.
But you can bet that the M$M will protect Coulter-gueist. Her, Mathews and Scharbourgh are MSNBC's contribution the the Pentagon's PsyOps plans of keeping us "chattering classes" distracted and at each other's throats.

we should all say "Ann WHO" AND LEAVE IT AT THAT. She does not deserve any attention what so ever.

16. Couldn't disagree more

...Elizabeth should say something, it's when we don't say things bad situations get out of hand.

Women who don't talk about abuse, abused children who don't say anything until years later....nope we need to encourage people to stand up and speak loudly when things are wrong.

Elizabeth did...she's a role model for our young girls. As the bumper stick says "Speak your mind even if your voice shakes" Quote by Maggie Kuhn, words to live by.

Cheers

No problem...
I see both sides of it. It WAS good of her to call in but then again it gives Coulter and her fans more oxygen and she's legitimized...

20. Elizabeth's point was that we need to raise the level of political discourse in this country
she was saying it to Matthews and all news orgs. as much as she was saying it to Coulter.

I thought what she said was great, and Coulter didn't address the point, which shows she can't talk issues, she can only make childish attacks.

I support Elizabeth!

21. Vile Annie would continue to say disgusting things about Edwards and his family
Whether Elizabeth called in or not. The Democrats MUST stand up to the bullies and put them in their place and say, "I'm mad as hell and I''m not going to take it anymore." Even if they reword the quote slightly, let the righteousness show through.

22. I'm sure it was heartfelt, but, at the end of the day, it was all about politics
It was a highly calculated move. EE's Calling Ann raises Edwards' profile with the base and gets more money to flow in. The fact that she got to say things she really meant and surely wanted to say for a long time was a bonus.

The flipside is here we are talking about Coulter and her profile and fan-base is as elevated and galvanized as ever, but EE wasn't doing this to take down Ann.

23. Coulter represents the Culture of Hate
and makes millions spewing that crap. Elizabeth decided to ask politely for her to stop it since she was hurting the political process with personal attacks on their family, as well as others.

I'm glad she stepped up, obviously, no one else was going to do it. That's the kind of Team the Edwards are, the rest are just politics as usual.

26. I see your point, but I don't think Edwards lowered herself at all...
She showed class and dignity, and she stepped up to address a mean spirited woman who needed a good talking to.

Elizabeth Edwards showed pure grace in the way she handled the matter, and proved herself to be the better person than Coulter - not that there was ever any doubt about that.

I think it's interesting that a lot of folks jumped on John Kerry's shit for supposedly "not doing enough to address the Swift Boat Maggots for Bush", but when Elizabeth Edwards DOES address a blathering nut job who is just as demented as the Swift Scum were, she's accused of lowering herself? Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess.

Yes, Coulter is an ass, you're right about that, Jenmito, but I think what Mrs. Edwards did was necessary and very appropriate.
