Half of Americans say they wouldn't vote for Clinton in '08
By William Douglas | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — More than half of Americans say they wouldn't consider voting for Sen. Hillary Clinton for president if she becomes the Democratic nominee, according to a new national poll made available to McClatchy Newspapers and NBC News.

The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research found that 52 percent of Americans wouldn't consider voting for Clinton, D-N.Y.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, was second in the can't-stand-'em category, with 46 percent saying they wouldn't consider voting for him.

Clinton has long been considered a politically polarizing figure who'd be a tough sell to some voters, especially many men, but also Clinton-haters of both genders. Thursday's survey provides a snapshot of the challenges she faces, according to Larry Harris, a Mason-Dixon principal.

"Hillary's carrying a lot of baggage," he said. "She's the only one that has a majority who say they can't vote for her."

2. Count me in for both...
I wouldn't vote for Clinton or Romney under any circumstances. If the Democrats are stupid enough to give her the nomination, they can expect four more years of a Republican in the White House.

3. If she's nominated, lets retest the CW.
Lots of people might say one thing in a poll now and will have a change of heart if the choice is Hillary or whatever Republican is opposing her.

11. Nominating Hillary would be risky and irresponsible
and it will lead to an electoral debacle, particularly when you consider how negatively the Democratic Congress is seen by disillusioned voters that feel betrayed by the Democrats they elected.

When are we going to learn that to listen to the DLC is to invite electoral disaster?

7. Excellent point,
maybe we can get someone else to do the job of electing qualified leaders for us, we don't seem to want that job either.

9. No big surprise.
I don't know any Dems who will vote for her. I'm sure they are out there but nobody that I know personally.

10. If this poll came out in June 2008...it would be predictive...
As it is, it is not, not that it isn't relevant. It is interesting in that it shows where candidates have work to do...however it really does need to be taken in perspective. Other polls taken at the same time show significantly different results...so poll averaging and trends are important...

Rasmussen for example, does not show the same picture at all, and of course Newsweek showed a much brighter scenario for the Democratic candidates...

IMO, given how well Hillary is campaigning for the nomination, I see no reason to believe her negatives cannot be lowered once the general election campaign starts...

12. Americans have already made their minds up about Hillary
She isn't going to be changing any minds if she is nominated. Those that like her, will continue to like her. Those that hate her, will continue to hate her. Those that loath her, will continue to loath her.

Worse still for Hillary's adoring fans is that there is no one without an opinion about Hillary, so there is no way for you guys to compensate for her negative numbers.

13. More truthiness...
You have any evidence to back that up? Her favorability ratings have jumped around from the mid-thirties to high forties...so clearly people do change their minds...and in fact, places where she campaigns her numbers consistently improve. I know you don't want them too, but they do, and they will...

There is a subset of close minded people, Republicans, certain "progressives" who she will never win over...and that is fine...plenty of room for her with Democrats and independents...most people are not automotons (except some groups that I have mentioned), and how a person behaves and what ideas they have will have an effect...

14. What part of "52-percent won't vote for Hillary" don't you get?
Bush also has a core vote of irrational fanatics between 30-40 percent.

15. What part of "one poll"
Don't you get...

I guess Rasmussen is not the favored DU poll anymore since it no longer shows a significant advantage for Obama or even Edwards...

16. Golly they sure have different polls don't they.
People that don't like Hillary manage to get a poll published that says she won't win. Then you get another poll where she is ahead of everybody by 15 to 20 points. Oh well we'll just have to wait and see.

17. And people never lie in these polls, either.
Lots of people will never vote for Hillary, unless, of course, she's the Democratic candidate and their choice is her or the Republican nominee.

Honestly, I won't vote for her in the primary, but if she wins, I'll be happy to support her.

19. I thought McClatchy had/has a good rep, which is why I posted this.
It has nothing to do with who 'I' like or not. If Obama was in this headline, or Edwards, I would have posted that, too.

22. Hillary will never win a Senate seat in New York state.
There are a lot of conservatives there, once you get outside of New York City. Plus have you seen her negative numbers? She has very high unfavorability ratings.

She will never win.

:sarcasm:
