Obama draws crowd in Mt. Pleasant home

Neither several roaring trains nor a bug down the throat dampened the speech given by Barack Obama in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday.
Obama was interrupted several times during his outdoors presentation - once by a tiny gnat and the other times by passing trains, bearing thunderously down the track only a block away. The speech was given in the backyard of Lois and Frederick Crane at 601 N. White St. in Mt. Pleasant. Obama waited these interruptions out and made light of them.
"It didn't look that big until it came close," joked Obama about the bug. "Then it lodged down in there ." He asked for a bottle of water before continuing his speech. He said that the disturbances were a small price to pay for the spectacular view behind the Crane's house.
Obama's speech focused on covering as many issues as he could get in. He hit education, alternative energy, foreign policy, the Iraq war, the economy, health care and the current administration. He spoke disparagingly of the Bush administration's "failure in Iraq" and spoke of how he had never once voted in favor of the war. He said that the war should be ended immediately and said that the United States' over-consumption of fossil fuels has led to expanding the conflict.
"We're funding effectively both sides of the war on terror," said Obama about U.S. importing of Middle Eastern oil. " a war that should never have been fought in the first place."
Obama suggested that instead of attacking Iraq or Iran, the U.S. should be concentrating on the real war on terror - catching and detaining known terrorists to prevent future attacks.
"I don't know if you noticed, but we still haven't caught Bin Laden," Obama said.
Another current issue elicited further wry humor from Obama at the administration. The speech was given the day after Bush repealed "Scooter" Libby's prison sentence, which Libby incurred on charges of leaking national security information.
"My friend ... pointed out that even Paris Hilton got some jail time," Obama said.
Health care was a big topic of Obama's presentation. He said that he believes in a "universal" health care system. He explained this as a way of rerouting all of the tax dollars given to big pharmaceutical companies into a program for having regular free checkups for children. He said that giving children these free checkups will actually save the government and insurance companies billions of dollars a year by preventing medical problems.

"Obama suggested that instead of attacking Iraq or Iran, the U.S. should be concentrating on the real war on terror - catching and detaining known terrorists to prevent future attacks."
