Subliminal, yeah, right..:sarcasm:
Also, the "Terror's New Face," in the upper left hand corner of the page, is in "black & white."
Newsweek isn't very subtle.:puke:

27. Yes, Newsweek is not subtle about its support for Obama
They even put him on their cover before he did anything in the senate. ;)

As far as the "Terror's New Face", Newsweek presumably has a story about the terrorist doctors in Britain.

It also says "country stars rise again", clearly an attempt to link Obama to popular musicians and remind people of his "rising star" status in order to win him some votes.

30. What is the motive?
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 02:06 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
You offered a conspiracy theory without a motive. Why would a magazine that has consistently promoted Obama for three years and did so again with a positive cover story about him hatch a heinous plot to subliminally cost him a few votes by "linking" him to country music stars, er, terrorists.

If Newsweek really wanted to damage Obama they would publish negative stories about him for once, or, better yet, ignore him totally and continue the HRC is inevitable meme or promote another candidate as an alternative to HRC.

42. I am simply expressing an opinion
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 03:48 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
I find it ironic to see Obama, a media creation, being painted as a victim of the very media organs that have built him up consistently for three years and do so again in this story. People are automatically assuming that Newsweek is out to get him without thinking about the context. The context of what happened recently that the magazine is reporting on (doctors as the new "face" of terror) and the context of Newsweek's three year record of promoting Obama (including this cover story).

The fundamental question being ignored by those who see this as a nefarious Newsweek trick to hurt Obama is this: if Newsweek was out to get him why did they write another pro-Obama piece as their cover story?

This is a simple question. I look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance.

64. When or if he gets the nomination
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 09:21 PM by truedelphi
They will smear him -- no doubt about it

Both Time and Newsweek use subliminals. I remember a long time ago, Time had an ad campaign for its magazine in which every shot of Reagan showed him looking strong and fit - and the one shot of Carter was that moment when he was attacked by some water creature while out in a canoe (Rabbit? Ortter?) Carter looked very startled.

The advertisers are very aware that Half of what goes on inside a person's brain is in these "We aren't saying it - we are portraying it" situations.

A great deal of our military budget is in what is called the "black box" projects (no relation to Bev Harris's black box designations for hackable voting machines.) Black box projects are related to CIA endeavors and include the media's participation.

We don't know how much is in these black box enterprises - probably at LEAST thirty billion dollars - and some of it goes to seeing that creations like TIME "magazine" can sway the country *subliminally* so that we don't go to far to the center.

48. I see something entirely different than what others are seeing.
I didn't even notice the text on the cover because I mentally disconnect other assorted headlines, that always might be about anything, from the picture.

What I noticed was the photography. First they got too close so his facial features are distorted with the parts closer to the camera looking larger. Second, while being too close, they did the shot looking up slightly so that the bottom part of his face, closer to the camera, looks bigger proportionally. Sum result of those two: stereotypical racial image of a black man with big lips and a wide nose. Third, shot up close from slightly off center so that his face looks distorted or slightly deformed. His right ear is 2.4 cm high on my screen while his left is 2.2 cm. Small difference but subliminally noticeable, while being close enough to a straight-on shot that you don't consciously notice it being off center and so your visual processing doesn't automatically take account of the perspective distortion. In fact all the causes for all the distortions are just enough to cause noticeable results without being blatant enough to consciously register the distortion.

Terrorism has kind of been in the news lately...Surely when Newsweek puts Obama on its cover for the 85th time it will make sure to airbrush the rest of the magazine and report only happy stories that somehow boost Obama, such as stories about rising country music stars. ;)

25. Why isn't the Obama campaign complaining about another positive cover story from Newsweek?
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 01:50 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
What was Newsweek supposed to do? Simply because Obama was on the cover ignore a current events story on terrorist doctors in Britain (which is presumably what "terror's new face" refers to)?

It also said "country stars rising again." Maybe this was part of pro-Obama Newsweek's plot to link Obama to popular musicians (who are especially popular in areas where Obama presumably would need a boost if he made it to the GE) and also to remind people for the thousandth time that Obama is a "rising star." The point? You can spin anything if you look closely enough. The bottom line is Newsweek went to bat for Obama once again and the Obama campaign is surely happy about this. They certainly are not going to complain about a favorable cover story in the nation's second most influential magazine!

Newsweek hates Obama so much they were promoting him on their cover before he even did anything in the senate!

You can spin this as HRC being shown in a less favorable photo than Obama, the man, who looks strong and commanding in the photo. It also says "Who's Next" at the top, implying that it is time for a change and an end to Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton?.

(enter spin) This has "next president" in bigger and bolder print. Clearly Time, the nation's most influential magazine, is subliminally trying to make people believe Obama will inevitably become the next president.

Which cover story is more favorable? ;)

Sometimes, the corporate media is so transparent that you just have to laugh at them.

Too bad a substantial majority of Americans no longer possess the "self defense skills" to see when they're being manipulated- even when it's blatant.

That, more than anything, is responsible for the predicament that the US finds itself in.

50. Maybe it is just you. Dissenting a bit here...
... I see a handsome face, in the same mode I find in portrait drawing books, where the light is coming from one side, and the other side is dramatically receding into shadow.

The shot from below suggests he's "above the crowd," looking down thoughtfully.

"Terror's New Face," if it is intended to have anything to do with Barack Obama, could be looked upon as suggesting he will be "Terror's" worst enemy.

"Black & White" is clearly referring to his opposition to traditiional dogma. And the title is "Black *and* White," not "Black *or* White." In other words, a "man for all seasons."

As to suggesting that he's a "country boy," I think not. I don't support him for President, but I listen when he speaks. He's articulate and charming. I don't support him because I *do* support Dennis Kucinich, Al Gore if he would run. Mr. Obama is too close to the Evangelical crowd for my taste. I'v read his recent book and agree with much he has to say. Should he be elected, I would support him as far as I could, in good conscience. And *whatever* he might have to say, it's such a relief to listen to a man who speaks English with precision and grace. Any new President will need to have a team of English teachers thoroughly exorcising the "Is our children learning" vibes from the White House, before occupying it! :)

That cover could be looked at as a Rohrschach Test. We project our own perceptions onto it.

I suspect Mr. Obama has the personal esteem not to look for slights where none were intended.

I suspect that most people didn't notice it either. "Terror's New Face" is a topic that has certainly been in the news lately and is a major story in this issue.

Every week, Newsweek has banner headlines at the top of its cover page. - I'm sure that anyone, if they are so inclined, could find some way to connect it negatively with the cover photo. I think you're really stretching it.
