Anyone read BLUE GRIT by Laura Flanders? |
|
Subtitle: True Democrats Take Back Politics From The Politicians
Flanders (RadioNation) chronicles the activist boots on the ground not usually covered by the media, and starts by saying, "Blue Grit is a book of good news for grim times." She makes the case that what's happening with Dems on the streets is something quite different from what's represented by the centrist talking heads of our party ~ a revolution of sorts. Gosh, I sure do hope so!!
Has this book been discussed here yet?

Description from Amazon:
Who are the members of today's Democratic party, and how does the party serve them? What are the differences in funding between Democratic- and Republican-led efforts? How do the parties react to movements within their base-and how does this affect the outcome of elections? Disgruntled Democrat Flanders-author, journalist and Air America radio host-explores the answers to these and other questions on a cross-country tour of the Democratic party and its (nominal) members. Highlighting progressive victories taking place outside the party establishment, Flanders presents the lessons Democrats in power could learn from their constituents "if they were inclined to learn." In-depth analysis of movements from Utah's liberals to South Dakota's recent, successful anti-abortion campaign provides insight not only into campaign leaders, but into the role of funding, media and old fashioned grassroots-style activism. Flanders (Bushwomen) brings to this work enough data, recent history and progressive ideas-as well as wit, style and acerbic charm-to make this required reading for anyone looking to make sure "the Democratic party is finally serious" about a victory for progressives in 2008. 2. Thanks, I hadn't seen that... |
|
But I started the book today and it's very colorful ~ she says the DLC built a "Penthouse Party: all top-floor suites, no load-bearing walls, no foundations, no functioning stairway to the street." Yep!
I've been feeling pretty blue (haha) about the Dems lately, so this should be inspiring!

"When they let their principles drive their politics rather than the other way around, progressives stand to win victories that are worth fighting for, even if they take years to achieve. And along the way, engaging, rather than ducking, the tough debates pays rewards." ~ Laura Flanders, BLUE GRIT
This book gives an eye-opening look at how the party actually operates, how it marginalizes the base and those who work to get out the vote in cities and states across the nation. Flanders shows how Republicans reward their friends, while Democrats reward their enemies.
imo this primary season should be about fighting for the soul of the Democratic Party ~ are we the progressive party or not? If not, after 30 years in the trenches I'm no longer interested.
