2. People on the mainland never hear what the issues we struggle with every day
they are

1. Affordable housing... real estate prices are obscene and the locals can not afford to home a home. Plus unlike the mainland we can not just load up the car and move to another county where it is cheaper. We are the most isolated part of the world (excluding Antarctica).

2. Hawaiian nationhood. We of non-Hawaiian blood live in a host culture that was overthrown by the us government. Native Hawaiians have no "native" rights unlike American Indian tribes.

3. Endangered habitat. We have more endangered species than anywhere else in the world!

11. my answers
housing.. you're not alone - same thing in So. Cal and many other areas of the country.

Native Hawaiians - What exactly do you mean by rights? Land given to them etc.. I'mn not sure how to answer this one since I'm not sure what the natives are looking for. My grandma was a native Hawaiian - she was born there in 1885 but she was of Portuguese descent so I don't think she counts :-)

Endangered habitats? We all need help with that.

5. Shit, just take the time to read his platform on the issues yourself!
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 02:48 PM by LaPera
What do you want...it written in stone and for us to make a decision for you...I don't understand what your asking? Read! Do your own research and see if Edwards has done what he says he will do in the past.... We can't decide for you. http://johnedwards.com/about/issues/

7. I did and there is nothing about Hawaiian recognition!!
this is not about making a decision for myself.. this is about his (and your) awareness of our unique Hawaiian issues!

8. With all due respect..
There are 49 other states that have their own individual crises that they deal with each and everyday. The job of the President is not to tend to the individual needs of each and every state, but rather make decisions that helps the nation as a collective unit. If you want attention to be brought to Hawaii, the I would suggest getting into state politics.

13. Welcome to DU leftshoe!
as for the topic... the state keeps getting told to go away when ever this issue comes up in congress, the senate of the white house. We in Hawaii are in agreement on this issue.. its the mainlanders and washington who turn a deaf ear to us.

did you know that we have 2 official state languages? Hawaiian and english. In state and county courts you can have a case heard in hawaiian. How many other states can say that!

10. Rights for oppressed nationalities
Well I hope that all candidates claiming to be progressive would support an exploited nation's right to self-determination (i.e. including the right to form their own separate country if they so choose). In addition to assisting the oppressed nation in protecting its language and heritage (i.e. its right to exist as a distinct people). I am not sure if any Democratic candidate has made any statement like this though.

15. Sure, but how many times have you been to that forum?
Only residents venture there. It helps one little when the issues need to be elevated to the NATIONAL stage!
