Malicious, Vindictive and Mean-Spirited: Bush To The Nation’s Health Educator
>
> Posted by N=1 on July 10th, 2007
>
> The NYTimes via Reuters just published the testimony of Dr. Richard Carmona, the last US Surgeon General. Unsurprisingly, he related being directed not to speak truthfully, accurately and scientifically about stem cell research, contraceptive use and reproductive health, instead mandating him to advocate for abstinence-only unscientific and unfounded programs.
>
> “Anything that doesn’t fit into the political appointees’ ideological, theological or political agenda is ignored, marginalized or simply buried,” Dr. Richard Carmona, who served as the nation’s top doctor from 2002 until 2006, told a House of Representatives committee.”The problem with this approach is that in public health, as in a democracy, there is nothing worse than ignoring science, or marginalizing the voice of science for reasons driven by changing political winds. The job of surgeon general is to be the doctor of the nation, not the doctor of a political party,” Carmona added.
>
> Carmona said Bush administration political appointees censored his speeches and kept him from talking out publicly about certain issues, including the science on embryonic stem cell research, contraceptives and his misgivings about the administration’s embrace of “abstinence-only” sex education.

>
> Chairman Waxman’s Opening Remarks are here and include this wake-up alarm:
>
> Like the 1964 smoking report, the Surgeon General’s work has shaped the nation’s understanding of public health. But what we will learn today is that this essential part of our government is in crisis. Political interference is compromising the independence of the Office of the Surgeon General. On key public health issues, the Surgeon General has been muzzled. The Surgeon General’s greatest resource — his or her ability to speak honestly and credibly to the nation about public health — is in grave jeopardy..........

5. the outrages just keep coming. This adm. is just so unreal.
If someone wrote about it prior to 2000 and it was fiction the writer would get laughed out of the business as writing something just too farfetched.
