These are the Dem candidates for President
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 11:52 PM by MonkeyFunk
according to those who've filed with the FEC.

Which ones should be included in the debates?

Edit: These are not all for this year, but my spot check showed many of them are. But should these people have been included in previous debates?

2. Actually that's a misrepresentation
Due to FEC regs, presidential campaign committees survive the campaign for a number of years. The vast majority of your' list' aren't running.

Way to go. It still doesn't absolve Hillary and Edwards of conniving to stifle the debate.

3. yes
I edited my OP

There's no way to search the FEC database by year.

But should these people all have been included in the debates the years they ran?

Why waste time on democracy when we have Clinton.

Should all those people have been included in the debates the years they ran?

11. Yes, and we need to take the money out of running. Then we would end up with choices
not dependant on cash. ANd we could hear about the issues instead of the vague feel good themeatic campaigns we are getting now.

You may have noticed that in many of the debates this year, some candidates are a lot more equal than others when it comes to actual on screen time.

19. I think an actual debate would be useful. Instead moderators ask questions and they call that
a debate.

27. Do you have a list of the 60 plus people? I thought you didn't know what year they ran, and now
you have them all running this year?

You really want your cake and eat it too.

Take a break, clear your mind. You aren't being particularly lucid lately. Cindy would be worried about your mental state, if she was reading this thread...

28. It's a madeup number
let's say it's 30. It could be 40. Who knows?

You're deliberately dancing around the point - that ALL debates exclude people who are running. Sometimes people get upset because it's THEIR guy who gets excluded, but I'm trying to see if anybody reasonably expects that ALL candidates be included in a debate.

And why on earth would I be worried about what Cindy thinks about me? What's that got to do with anything? I'm not a regular on any of the Sheehan threads.

31. All debates do not exclude all the people that are running, unless they do so by design.

33. Can you name
one debate that has included every candidate?

The OP lists all the people who've filed as Dem presidential candidates for the last few election cycles. Are you saying everybody on that list has appeared in a national debate?

5. Here is an up to date list. Should these 9 candidates be included in debates?
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 11:57 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
There is no evidence that HRC and JE are conspiring to stifle debate, aside a convenient conspiracy theory created by an apparent Obama supporter.

Here is list of all Democratic candidates who have been excluded from every debate and forum.

Laura Davis-Aaron (Tennesse)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Except for the fact that contractor Laura Davis-Aaron filed paperwork with the FEC to run for President, little else is known about this 2008 Democratic hopeful. She lost a 2005 special election primary for an open State Senate seat (9th place - 1%), then filed for an open Congressional seat in 2006 but quit well before the primary. No website yet.

Michael Forrester Michael K. Forrester (Colorado)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Except for the facts that Michael Forrester has filed FEC paperwork to run for President in 2008 and has launched a campaign website, we cannot tell you much about this candidate. The website is filled with lots of photos of the candidate but the bio section is without any info. His platform is also rather sparse: repeal the "No Child Left Behind" law, raise the minimum wage, and guarantee health care for all Americans. Related link: Michael Forrester for President.

Dan Francis Danny M. "Dan" Francis (New York)

STATUS: EXPLORATORY CANDIDATE. Dan Francis served 20 years in the US Marine Corps -- rising from private to first lieutenant -- until his retirement in 1979. Over those years, he served two tours in Vietnam, was wounded three times in combat, and was awarded the Silver Star. Since leaving the Marines, he earned AA, BA and Master's degrees in education and has worked as a teacher. He was previously a candidate for Congress in 1992 and 1994. Related links: Dan Francis for President (campaign site), Defining Leadership 2008 (Francis' campaign blog) and MySpace: Dan Francis (official site).

Alfonzo Jones (California)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Except for the fact that Alfonzo Jones filed paperwork with the FEC to run for President -- just as he did in 1996, 2000 and 2004 -- no other info was known about this 2008 Democratic hopeful. No website yet.

John Joseph Kennedy John Joseph Kennedy (Georgia)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. John Joseph Kennedy was a registered write-in candidate for President in 2004 in Georgia, Indiana and Texas. On his campaign website, he describes himself as "an outstanding community leader, humanitarian, champion of children's rights, environmentalist, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and a man of extraordinary vision." Kennedy is a freelance writer, marketing executive and former model. He explains his motives for running on his campaign site: "I have now been called to serve God and my country as the TRUE DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE for the Presidency, to right the wrongs of America!" Kennedy sees the 9/11 attacks as an "inside job" directed by the Bush Administration as a pretext for launching the war on terrorism ("It's an inside job! At the highest level on down, I will see that those who are really responsible for the insidious acts of terrorism in our country, and around the world, be prosecuted to the fullest extent of all domestic and international laws."). In 2004, Kennedy went so far as to blame Bush policies for hurricanes and other natural disasters. "I will stop the Bush family's manipulation of the elements of nature (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes) which have wrecked insurmountable havoc on our environment and disturbed the natural-flow of all life on this planet. They (especially Bush Sr.) have done this for personal, political and financial gain and greed," explained Kennedy. Related link: John Joseph Kennedy for President.

Karl Krueger Karl E. Krueger (South Dakota)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Long haul truckdriver and Vietnam War veteran Karl Krueger is running for President on a platform of promoting energy independence for the US. "I intend to put this nation on a course to be energy independent within 10 years of my election. After all, John Kennedy took us to the moon and back in 10 years with technology that didn’t exist when he began, it should not be too difficult for us to become energy independent in the same amount of time using technology that we already have," he explained. Krueger was previously a Democratic nominee for Congress in Wisconsin against a GOP incumbent in 1988. Related link: Karl Krueger for President.

Sal Mohamed Sal Mohamed (Iowa)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Chemical engineer Sal Mohamed lost Democratic primary contests in Iowa for Congress in 2004 and Governor in 2006 -- but he does start the race with some minimal name identification in that early contest state. Mohamed's primary campaign tactic in his past Iowa runs could be described as low tech/low cost: walking around wearing "sandwich board" signs and waving signs at busy intersections. He launched his Presidential campaign just one month after losing the '06 gubernatorial primary. Mohamed's campaign theme is "Human Decency will Prevail," which is backed by his call for having millions of US consultants held promote economic development of poor nations, place US national interests ahead of personal interests, narrowing the gap in the US between rich and poor, developing an exit strategy for Iraq, and "taking politics out of our lives and putting science in." Unfortunately for Mohamed, he was born in Egypt and became a naturalized US citizen in 1983 -- meaning he is constitutionally barred from being President. Related link: Sal Mohamed for President.

Jim Prattas James J. "Jim" Prattas (Hawaii)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Campaigning under the slogan of "Love is the Doorway In," Jim Prattas describes himself as "a poor ignorant soul who is just an artist, healer and disabled combat Vietnam veteran living on a stipend ... uneducated and ignorant a compared to most of my fellow citizens." His unusual campaign website is decorated with his original art works throughout the various pages. His autobiographic story -- from his 2000 campaign site -- told of near death experiences (including meeting God and seeing angels), meeting celebrities, his fights with the US military after being wounded in Vietnam, death threats against him by the Hawaiian Mafia, a plot by President G.H.W. Bush's friends to have him arrested when he wanted to challenge Bush in the 1992 race, his past use of marijuana, his divorce, and more. "If you have a son or daughter in Iraq or in Afghanistan fighting this crazy oil war. If you are not outraged with what is going on in America today, and in the world and in our White House, Senate and Congress, then you are not an American, and obviously you are not on the same page in American family life, who has a heart, soul, or spirit for your own people and country," wrote Prattas. When he ran in 2000 as a Republican, he did not qualify for any primaries. In 2004, as a Democrat, the same thing happened again. He's back for a third run in 2008, and this time he thinks he may be able to qualify for at least one primary ballot. Related link: Jim Prattas for President.

Ole Savior Oloveuse O. "Ole" Savior (Minnesota)

STATUS: ANNOUNCED CANDIDATE. Ole Savior, an eccentric artist and poet, has been a frequent candidate in Minnesota over the years for many federal, state and local offices. He usually finishes around the back the of the pack with 1% -- but he keeps running year after year. His top three concerns were a "nuclear-free world, world hunger, and better education for all mankind." His favorite movie is The Terminator, his favorite TV show is X-Files and his favorite book is the Bible's Book of Revelations. If elected, he promises to "create a new and more peaceful world for the next generation of children." He previously filed FEC paperwork for the 2004 race, but failed to qualify for any Presidential primary ballots. He filed paperwork in 2006 to make a second White House run. 36. Nice find, d_m_c
I think I'll stick with Obama, though. ;)

Out of curiosity, why do you think the Hillary/Edwards thing originated with an Obama supporter? Got proof? It was my understanding that a reporter picked up the conversation.

Hillary and Edwards are right to some extent, it's just hard to know where to draw the line. Kucinich doesn't have a chance, but I wouldn't want to close the curtain on him, as he brings a lot to the debates. Hell, even Gravel is good for entertainment value sometimes.

42. I don't think this originated with BO supporters
It seems Faux Noise is the source of this. You are right, though, a reporter started this. What I was referring to was the fact that it has been largely Obama supporters pushing this at DU. In fairness, this is partly for default reasons. Edwards and Obama enjoy the support of most DU'ers and HRC has her small slice at DU. Kucinich seems to be the only other candidate with any sizable level of support at DU. Since JE and HRC supporters are not going to push this and attack JE/HRC for this it leaves the rest of DU who does not support either candidate and most of these individuals are BO supporters. Still, the usual suspects have been heavily promoting this. One big BO supporter has posted at least three or four threads just to continue fanning the flames of this.

Is this rational? Perhaps. BO supporters smell blood. They know if HRC and JE falter that helps their candidate by default, since the lion's share of defections from the duo will go to him.

I agree. I think Edwards has a good idea with randomly[/i[ splitting the field into two. Why not have 4 candidates debate for an hour and then have the next four debate? I also think Kucinich brings a lot to the table. He says some things that need to be said. That said, his grandstanding over this, which is similar to his grandstanding on the Big 3 opting out of the Faux debate, is not going to do anything to increase his dismal poll numbers. Instead of grandstanding and whining he needs to analyze why he is stuck at 1-2% in the polls. I have mixed feelings about Gravel. I agree, he does bring some entertainment value and occasionally he says something good that the mainstream candidates will not say. My chief problem with him is that he attacks other candidates too often. He knows he will not win. He is not helping himself but only hurting (albeit very, very slightly--as if Mike Gravel's opinion is really going to change the game. This is partly why the conspiracy theory is absurd. Why would HRC and JE want to censor candidates at 1% in the polls? They are, sadly, largely irrelevant) our party's GE chances with his attacks on our candidates.

39. I agree with Texas_Kat...
It still doesn't absolve Hillary and Edwards of conniving to stifle the debate. Bad move, and VERY un-"d"emocratic.

10. I recommend asking a mod to delete the OP
and restarting this thread with the correct information, which is drastically different that what's in the OP. Or if you can still edit, fix the OP to include just the real data, instead of a disclaimer saying "this isn't accurate."

DRAFTMARTIN SHEEN FOR PRESIDENT, for example, isn't even a person. It's a committee.

to state that I can't search by year. But we can discuss whether these candidates should've been invited to all the debates in the years they ran.

15. I don't think it conveys the right story
even with your edit, because the effect of your OP I think is to send the message that this is OMG an endless list. I notice when you posted the correct list, though, you fluffed it up with the background info, so in just scrolling through, the impression again is that it's nearly as long as the OP, although of course thats not at all the case.

That's why I'm suggesting the deletion and restart - so the list in the OP doesn't just have a footnoted sort of acknowledgement that not all of these people are running, but instead shows this:

Laura Davis-Aaron (Tennesse)
Michael Forrester Michael K. Forrester (Colorado)
Dan Francis Danny M. "Dan" Francis (New York)
Alfonzo Jones (California)
John Joseph Kennedy John Joseph Kennedy (Georgia)
Karl Krueger Karl E. Krueger (South Dakota)
Sal Mohamed Sal Mohamed (Iowa)
Jim Prattas James J. "Jim" Prattas (Hawaii)
Ole Savior Oloveuse O. "Ole" Savior (Minnesota)

17. I never posted an edited list
that was someone else, and it didn't come from the FEC.

There was no need for you to duplicate the list here.

My point still stands - dozens of candidates run for President EVERY election cycle that you've never heard of.

Which ones should be included in the debates?

20. Ah, that was someone else, sorry
I did want to post the two lists side by side, though, even if you didn't want to see them side by side.

I am making the point that your OP grossly misrepresents the situation. You have a little of this: "TERROR TERROR TERROR A BUNCH OF FOREIGNERS ARE ABOUT TO ATTACK OUR PIPELINES" when the reality is more like "DUDES, there are a bunch of people loitering at the gas station. One of them's wearing a beret."

These are all people who've run for President. The vast majority of them were not included in the debates.

Do you wish to discuss the actual issue I'm raising, or just make complaints?

26. I've explained
the FEC website does not allow a search by year.

But my point remains: ALL those people ran for President during the last few cycles. Should they all have been allowed at the debates?

34. I don't understand your explanation at all.
There's probably a couple hundred million natural-born Americans over 35 years old. We could list them all and then have a debate about how many of them should be allowed in the debates. Yeah, I guess we could do that, but what would be the point?

Maybe you could explain it a little better.

37. That is a list
of people who have registered with the Federal Elections Commission as Democratic candidates for President going back, it looks like, to 1992.

I cannot search their database by election cycle.

Nonetheless, my point is that EVERY election has many, many people (see the list) who are "registered" candidates, but aren't included in the national debates.

Some here argue that "all" candidates should be included in the debates. I argue that "all" candidates are NEVER included in the debates. That a line is drawn somewhere.

We're really arguing about where the line is drawn, NOT whether every registered candidate should be included.

29. If you start a thread with the correct information in the OP
then I'd be happy to discuss that. I'm less happy pretending this is a meaningful discussion when there are questions here like should we allow dozens of people in a debate? How are we going to hold a debate with 60 people in it?

Even the question of whether all of those people in the past should have been allowed to debate is meaningless, when it isn't sorted by year - so it's worth finding a site where you CAN sort by year, rather than taking the easy way out and intermingling historical and current data.

If I posted all the major democratic candidates since the party was formed, it would look like too many people to have in a debate, but spread out over all the years, it's fine. Like I said, as it's presented, it's a little Fox Newsy, and I'm not so interested in discussing policy in that venue. Change up the venue, and you'll get responses closer to what you're hoping for, I suspect.

30. Then leave this thread alone if you don't like it
I've explained why I can't do it, and I've also explained why it doesn't detract from my point one iota.

Do you think ALL these candidates should've been included in the debates in the years they ran?

40. Of course you can do it
You would simply ask the mods to delete this thread, and start a new one with the correct information (which you can pull from other responses in this thread) in the OP. Maybe I'm assuming too much - have they told you they're unwilling to delete the thread?

I can't answer your second question with the way it's phrased, because it is meaningless. I don't know how many candidates per year this works out to, and some are committees, not candidates. From "Draft Martin Sheen Committee" I can't tell if he even ran, or if a group of citizens unrelated to him simply wanted him to run.

I oppose allowing entire committees to take part in presidential debates without their candidate in attendance, so right now, the way you've presented it, I'd have to say no. :D

41. Without starting a new thread...
Frankly, lwfern, I think you're making too much of this "delete thread" point. You've done useful work by extracting the names of minor candidates who are actually running this year (not committees). From your own post, the list is:

Laura Davis-Aaron (Tennesse)
Michael Forrester Michael K. Forrester (Colorado)
Dan Francis Danny M. "Dan" Francis (New York)
Alfonzo Jones (California)
John Joseph Kennedy John Joseph Kennedy (Georgia)
Karl Krueger Karl E. Krueger (South Dakota)
Sal Mohamed Sal Mohamed (Iowa)
Jim Prattas James J. "Jim" Prattas (Hawaii)
Ole Savior Oloveuse O. "Ole" Savior (Minnesota)

So, which if any of those people should be invited to participate in a nationally televised debate?

I agree with others who've posted that the current so-called "debate" format isn't all that useful. They're really joint press conferences. The media should be more open to exploring alternatives: genuine debate, with candidates addressing or questioning each other; debates limited to a specific narrow subject area, so that candidates would have to get into more detail instead of using their canned answers; and perhaps (what provoked this thread in the first place) a format featuring only a subset of the entire field. A smaller debate wouldn't necessarily mean just the front-runners. Randomly dividing the eight candidates into two groups of four and holding two separate debates would probably be an improvement, or at least worth experimenting with.

But I'd still limit it to the eight candidates. I see no need to put Laura Davis-Aaron on nationwide television just because she says she's running for President.

32. I'd love to hear from dozens
of candidates. Perhaps there would be a wider range of ideas. It would be good for democracy in my opinion. For all I know there might be a gem out there that I could feel really excited about.

35. and what would the format be?
Say it's a two-hour debate. Say there are 40 candidates. Without allowing any time for questions, commercials, etc., that's 3 minutes per candidate.

And do you think people are as interested in what all the candidates have to say?

38. I am interested
and I consider myself people. Each debate could be on only one or two topics which could be discussed in length. I am all for ending the sound bite type of debates we have now.

43. lame argument
Equating Heywood Jablowme's quixotic narrative "from school board candidate to presidential candidate!" being denied a place at the debate table to a sitting Congressman running for the presidency being denied a space is asinine.

Should there be a litmus test for debate acceptance? Of course; Heywood, no matter how passionate about change, hasn't earned the credibility to justify national coverage of his campaign. If he ran for school board, went on to county executive, rose to governor, and then wanted to be President Jablowme, then it would be totally different.

If a congressman (or a former senator, which, ironically, is the title of both Mr. Gravel and Mr. Edwards) is too 'minor' to be included, then the format has jumped the shark and needs to be aborted with a dull hedge trimmer and a stout and just heart. This argument of 'seriousness' is fucking ludicrous; everything here is a media conspiracy, except probably the most insidiously stupid media frame, which is embraced fully and argued over endlessly.
