Nixon Aide Wanted GOP to Recruit Kerry
"Even as the Nixon administration was plotting in 1971 to destroy John F. Kerry, then the young, charismatic leader of Vietnam Veterans Against the War," the Washington Post notes "the president's top political strategist apparently didn't get the memo. Instead, the operative, Murray Chotiner, wrote his own note advocating that the Republican Party recruit Kerry."

Wrote Chotiner: "He is a Yale graduate and is inclined toward the 'establishment.' His background could be Republican."

"The memo was included in about 80,000 pages of documents released Wednesday by the National Archives, which oversees the Nixon library."

1. There's always someone in the organization who doesn't get the memo . . .
And so much political thinking is purely blue-sky that it makes advertising agencies' creative roundtables seem like a meeting of senior actuaries by comparison

2. They knew he was charismatic and influential. I like this part of his reply. LOL
"I experimented with a number of things in college. Being a Republican wasn't one of them. Besides, going to Yale doesn't make you a Republican. Going to Bob Jones University makes you a Republican."

3. Thanks, wisteria. For some reason, wyldwolf left Kerry's dead on response out of his OP.

8. Saying you "forgot" is a "sarcastic" response is really stretching the point.

9. LOL! But I said I "forgot to leave the link OUT!" See... I included the link ...
...so everyone could click it. If I were trying to hide information, why would I include the link?

Like most conspiracy theories, yours ignores obvious contradictory evidence.

10. My last point. You conveniently left it out of OP. Also doubt most folks read the entire article.

Thanks to wisteria, we got Kerry's "right on" response from the linked article.

11. And what a silly point it is. I "conveniently" left out a whole bunch of stuff.

12. Thanks AK
He wasn't for sale - and I guess in 1973 they forgot the incredible smear job they did replete with dirty tricks in 1972. Had he ever considered the Republican party, that would have ended it.

What it does do is show that they slandered him in the 1970s because they knew how good he really was.
