Obama draws loudest cheers at NAACP convention
It's the first time he's outshone Hillary Clinton at a candidates forum

Associated Press

DETROIT — Presidential hopeful Barack Obama drew the loudest cheers of the eight Democratic candidates at a civil rights forum Thursday as he assailed the Bush administration's record on race relations.

The candidates shared the stage at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's 98th annual convention. But it was Obama, seeking to become the first black president, who drew the strongest applause from the 3,000 attendees.

"I know what you know, which is that despite all the progress that has been made we still have more work to do," said the first-term Illinois senator.

The candidates are in a fierce struggle to capture the support of black voters, refusing to cede it to Obama. Hillary Rodham Clinton enjoys strong support in the black community, and John Edwards has won praise for his commitment to fighting poverty.

1. And just why wouldn't a black candidate draw the most cheers
at a black convention. Only makes sense guy. What's the big deal?

2. Do you not realize how insulting that is to black people?
By your thinking, Obama should be expected to get the least cheers at every other debate, since they have predominantly white audiences. Is that right?

3. That's ridiculous
The NAACP membership are not a bunch of ignorant sheep that blindly cheer any black person just because they're black.

I doubt that Alan Keyes or Condoleezza Rice or Clarence Thomas would get any cheers from this audience.

Here's a clue - black people are very much like white people. We can discern whether someone is looking out for our varied interests based upon what they say and what they do - not by whether they have black skin or white skin.
