WASHINGTON -- House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers today gave the Republican National Committee until the end of the month to comply with a subpoena to turn over for e-mails related to the forced resignations of at least eight federal prosecutors.
Conyers, a Detroit Democrat, issued the subpoena late last week, saying the committee had been requesting the documents for months. Today, the RNC sent Conyers a response saying President George W. Bush's attorneys told the committee to not produce the documents until the White House can determine whether they should be covered by a claim of executive privilege. ~snip~
Responding to that letter, Conyers argued that the Bush administration has no legal authority to stop the RNC from turning over any documents but said he was willing to wait until the end of the month "as a further accommodation."
But he warned that it's his belief that the RNC, a political committee, can't refuse to produce documents in its possession "based on an assertion by a third party -- in this case, the White House." ~snip~
