Alternative news about Massachusetts power structure, Harvard, MIT and other elite institutions in Massachusetts.

Obama’s 2nd-Top Contributor: Exelon Nuclear Power Firm

Exelon Nuclear, a business unit of the Illinois-based Exelon Corporation utility company, operates the largest nuclear fleet in the USA and its nuclear reactors represent about 20 percent of the U.S. nuclear industry’s power capacity. The CEO of Exelon Corporation, John Rowe, also took home an annual salary of $11,815,176 in 2006, according to the www.aflcio.org web site. But in a February 17, 2006 letter that’s posted on the Nuclear Energy Information Services watchdog site (www.neis.org), NEIS’s director noted that “recent news accounts of radioactive tritium leaks at Exelon’s Braidwood, Dresden and now Byron nuclear reactors finally expose nuclear industry claims of nuclear power being `emission free’ as utter nonsense,” yet Exelon “aspires to build new reactors, and extend operating lifetimes for its eleven old ones.”

Coincidentally, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ site, the second-largest individual source of contributions to U.S. Senator Barack Obama’s 2008 Democratic presidential primary campaign is the Exelon Corporation. So far, $159,800 in campaign contributions have gone to Obama’s campaign from either individuals or committees affiliated with the Exelon Corporation.

The huge Chicago based utility has been a good source for Obama, who has obviously cultivated some contacts there. Exelon CEO John W. Rowe was recently criticized by Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn for profiting off of a controversial rate hike. Don't know what Obama thinks of that, but...it is quite interesting.

1. SO FUCKING WHAT!!!
All types of people are contributing to everyones campaign. Quit blaming the candidates for who or where they get their contributions.

It's embarrassing and childish.

"other" candidates. Maybe you could spread the idea around.

2. It doesn't bother me if a candidate gets donations from the nuclear
power industry. It bothers me if they are elected and give that industry special treatment in return. How many candidates get money from the health insurance companies and big pharma? Many. How many get bucks from big oil? Many. I'm voting for the candidate who takes the cash and then does what is right, not payback.

9. Nuclear energy has to be heavily subsidized to be competitive.
It is also the best target for terrorism.

13. What? Are you on the wrong thread? Oprah is not being discussed
on this one. You "can" find 3 or 4 Oprah threads posted today,(elsewhere).

14. Some are viewing Oprah as a magical kingmaker
Oprah helps but she cannot crown a president. She supported * in 2000, right? Well, * got half a million less votes than Gore.

16. Deceptive headline...of course....
In the article:

"So far, $159,800 in campaign contributions have gone to Obama’s campaign from either individuals or committees affiliated with the Exelon Corporation."

Notice it's not the company. It's individuals...I'd like to see the list of committees.

Again, if someone works at the CIA and gives money to Obama, is the CIA backing Obama? If someone who owns an adult toy store gives money to the Obama campaign, does the porn industry support Obama?

20. Lame spin
Companies are not going to directly funnel money to candidates but they do "encourage" their employees to contribute to certain candidates.

It is funny how this lame excuse is suddenly being used in light of Obama's heavy corporate backing. Suddenly being the darling of Wall Street is a great thing among some progressives.
