This nation needs a modern-day Teddy Roosevelt. Which Democratic candidate comes close?
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 10:26 PM by brentspeak
Question: Is it realistic to expect Hillary Clinton, who's being feted by the GOP/DLC business community, to aggressively crack down on our modern-day monopolies, and push through, no matter what the cost, much-needed anti-monopoly legislation?

Er, uh, um...:eyes:

Question: Is it realistic to expect Barack Obama -- also being wined-and-dined by the usual suspects -- to make it his mission in life a sweeping campaign-finance reform agenda whose goal it is to obliterate, once-and-for-all, the pay-to-play D.C. beltway lobbyist system that's been primarily responsible for many of the nation's ills?

Uh, well you see, er...:eyes:

Question: Is it realistic to expect John Edwards to call for the revitalization of domestic American industry, the implementation of a modern-day 'square deal' type agenda, and the turning away of corporate interests from the White House front door?

Could be! :patriot:

3. As Thom Hartmann likes to point out
Teddy Roosevelt was hardly a radical when he took office.

He was forcibly MOVED along the political spectrum by the People clamoring for change.

I don't know how that relates to your question really, but I'd answer that the candidate with the least amount of corporate hooks in them would be your best bet.

4. Jim Webb
Teddy wouldn't vote for the IWR, permanent 'free' trade with China, the first bankruptcy bill, the 'Patriot' Act...

Vote for Jim Webb! The Anti-Clinton!

8. If not for Edwards, and the fact that Webb just moved into his Senate office, I'd vote Webb
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 10:14 PM by brentspeak
Unfortunately, he just finished moving into his office at the Senate.

I was looking for the sarcasm smiley... Edwards couldn't shine Teddy's boots if he was allowed to.

9. TR was fairly hideous and a Republican.
We really don't need another TR. Perhaps an FDR would be a better deal.

12. I'd Prefer Franklin To His Uncle, But...
Teddy had some faults, but he definitely stood up for the little guy (back when that phrase wasn't a joke). Busted monopolies, started the FDA (I think), did a lot of other good stuff.

14. Domestic policies were a breath of fresh air
but he was the first and prototype of the american imperialist. He championed the Spanish-American war, the annexation of Puerto Rico, the crypto-colonization of Cuba, and the hideous bloody conquest of the Philippines. It was his foreign policy that started the current ball rolling that we are now being crushed under.

19. FDR passed far more legislation for the benefit of taxpayers than TR
TR was not exactly enamored of his nephew's New Deal.

27. Since TR died in 1919
it would have been quite a feat for him to comment on any of FDR's policies.

And technically, FDR wasn't TR's nephew (they were 5th cousins or something like that). Eleanor was TR's niece.

30. Right you are. As to the relationship end, yes I too have read of FDR/TR as 5th cousins.
Also read of FDR referred to as TR's nephew.

16. Obama has published his earmarks for anyone to see. He is the only
candidate to do so. He also made public his tax returns and everything. He is someone who until he announced for the presidency took regular airplanes in coach to and from Chicago. No private air. No first class. And it was paid from his own pocket.
