He seems to be fine with the fact that young men and woman are going to die because a few Republicans are upset over having to stay up past their bedtimes.

Republicans would vote in the senate the way they feel and the reality they acknowledge in private discussions.

That's the problem with Republicans - they have no sense of citizenship to their country that trumps their party loyalty.

Here's the Boston Herald article - Kerry also makes the point that they all KNOW that Bush will start withdrawing and he's just playing political games right now.

You know old Rove has to roll out his newest product LINE on the war in September.

They bet that there'd be no significant political fallout. Unfortunately, they MAY be right. We'll see.

14. Remarkably juvenile comments on that short article. Something rote about them.
Are the Herald's readers' comments always so simplistic and similar to each other? Poor Herald. That level of commentary is embarrassing.

9. Bullshit--they already knew they weren't going to vote for cloture--
they just wanted to quietly vote against Levin-Reed with little attention and fanfare, in the middle of the day, for 15 minutes, and then get on with the rest of their business with few witnesses to their obstruction. Instead, the whole country's attention was drawn to the matter. If they voted against ending the war AGAINST their consciences and against the interests of our troops and the country, just to spite Democrats for wanting an up or down vote, then they will have to live with the consequences--I hope it's burning in hell.

Plus that they don't want a Dem resolution to be the one that gets the troops redeployed.

behind getting out of Iraq but are playing political games with the lives of the troops knowing full well that withdrawal will happen in the fall.

18. It's clear that the Republican leadership has made some sort of deal..
with Bush, which is akin to making a deal with the devil by the way, to not do anything until September, buying into some delusion that things will somehow miraculously improve. It was a brilliant move on the Dems part to start the push now, knowing full well their hands were tied, and things will continue to go south. Now they can't come out in September and say THEY were behind getting out troops out of this debacle.

21. It's sooooooo disgusting.

And now I just heard Thom Hartmann saying that most news coverage is saying the bill "died" when in fact it was never allowed to be brought to vote by the Grand Obstructionist Party.

I only read the initial stories and they did say Repubs blocked the vote although you had a to read a bit to get to that part. The headlines did make it sound like the Dems were defeated. Surprisingly the LAT story was better than WaPo and NYT.

That is also a good thing to point out. You give props to Collins even though her vote was probably just a political movement - voting "yea" to something she knew wouldn't pass so she could cover her ass with Maine voters. However, you slander Gordon Smith, who has been consistently distancing himself from his Republican colleagues, at least on issues of the war. IIRC, he was the first Republican senator to speak out against it.

Btw, what do "n/t," "eom," and "K+R" mean? I'm a noob and couldn't see a reference to them in the FAQ. Also, sorry if I used the wrong letters, but I think you'll know what I mean.

27. Actually, I didn't slander Smith--I have defended him pretty consistently
over the past few months for voting where his mouth was. I appreciate his stand. I just think the idea that some GOPer Senators were actually going to vote for cloture and then changed their mind because of the all-nighter is bull--that's just a way for the GOP to try to "get back" at the Dems for the sleepover. Warner, Lugar et al. had already declared they would not vote for timelines on the war--I doubt Voinovich or Domenici would have either. I don't give props to Collins--she's spineless. Her cloture vote was nice, but not especially helpful if she won't add her support for Levin-Reed. Hagel was the first Repub Senator (besides Chaffee? or Jeffords?) to criticize the war, has been doing it for years now, much to the detriment of his political career here in red Nebraska and nationally within the GOP--he's a true rebel on the issue, even warned about the unintended consequences that might come of our invasion of Iraq in a floor speech before he cast his vote on the IWR in 2002. Smith has been vocal largely within the last year, at least according to what I've read from a George Will column. I think he is genuinely opposed, though most folks (including his constituents who post here) think he's doing it for re-election purposes. n/t = no text, eom = end of message (same purpose as n/t), K= kick (sends thread back to the top of the pile), R = recommend. Welcome to DU!

28. It's a lie. Easy to say, "We would have voted with you if only
you hadn't done this or that," but if theDems hedn't done this or that, not only would the Repubs NOT have voted with them, they also would not have paid the price in bad publicity.
