Just One Question for the GOP ...
By Nancy Greggs

As we head into the 2008 elections, I have but one question for the powers-that-be in the Republican party: What the f*ck were you thinking?

When you praised Bush’s tax cuts way back when, and talked endlessly about how they would strengthen the economy, did you not think that John. Q. Middleclass would eventually realize that his share of the pie didn’t even come close to covering what he would be paying at the pump, no less the constant rise in the cost of living under Bush’s regime? Did you not think he would come to realize that what trickled-down his way smelled more like piss than money? Did you not think he’d figure out that you had lied to him?

When you supported programs like No Child Left Behind, did you not think that tens of millions of American parents would notice that their kids aren’t getting an education, but are merely being taught to rattle off test answers by rote – without any understanding of what the questions mean? Did you not think those parents were going to catch on sooner or later, and know that you had lied to them?

When you touted the incredible success of the war in Iraq, did you not think that the pure puff stories about how well things were going would be completely undone by the stories told by returning soldiers? Did you not think that a zillion upbeat, totally-fabricated MSM ‘good news’ items wouldn’t hold water when Minnie-down-the-street’s-son returned from his third tour of combat and started telling the neighborhood what was really going on? Did you not think that people in neighborhoods all over America would hear the truth, and know that you lied to them?

When you held yourselves out as the party that Supports the Troops, did you not think that gutting their pensions, extending their tours, refusing them appropriate rest periods away from the war zone, and denying disability claims for combat-related injuries was going to be perceived as a little less than actual support – and be something that would come back to bite you in the ass? Did you not think that those who really support the troops would come to the conclusion that you were lying yet again?

When you accused those who wanted our troops out of Iraq of being unpatriotic, did you not think that when the majority of the country eventually agreed with that sentiment, your constituents who now hold that opinion might take offense at having been labeled cut-and-run traitors, and probably won’t vote for your party again until hell freezes over?

When you thumped your chests as the great defenders of the country when you invaded Iraq, did you not think that when the inevitable outcome became apparent, i.e. that terrorism is on the rise as a result of your president’s policies, you’d be collectively up shit’s creek?

When you bragged endlessly about the wisdom of fighting ‘em over there so we wouldn’t have to fight ‘em over here, did you not think that every time this administration raised the specter of yet another possible attack in the US – which they have done every time their poll numbers drop – that might lead the country to believe you’re talking out of both sides of your lying mouths?

When you repeatedly placed the GOP on the moral values pedestal, did you not think that once the Foleys, the Allens, the Vitters (and the rest to be named at a later date) were eventually exposed, the Fundie crowd would abandon you faster than you can say “Jesus Wept”? Did you not think that this group would be especially turned-off by being lied to?

When the madman you’d placed in the White House issued signing statements, refused to adhere to the Geneva Conventions, pushed torture as an American policy, and engaged in illegal activities like warrantless wiretapping, did you not think that failing to speak up and exercise your obligations of oversight might lead the voters to believe you’re a bunch of spineless yes-men – you know, the kind of people nobody wants running their country?

When your idiot of a president acted like a clown in public, especially at international meetings of import, did you not think that the phrase ”the Republican party will bring dignity back to politics” would sound like the punchline to a really bad joke – the kind of joke that people with common sense don’t find the least bit funny?

When you went on and on and on about being the party of fiscal responsibility, did you not think a national debt of unprecedented proportions might get noticed? Did you not think that the constant cutting of every program from highway maintenance to food inspection would catch the attention of the average working stiff?

When your president and his administration started denying access to the minutes of every meeting, the testimony of every government employee, and every scrap of paper ever produced during their entire time in office, did you not think the citizenry might come to the conclusion that these people are a bunch of corrupt crooks out to cover their own tracks?

When you insisted on clinging to the president’s disastrous stay the course until we win in Iraq strategy while you give it some more thought between now and September, did you not think the voters would be keeping count of how many are being wounded or killed while you’re mulling things over?

So I’ll pose the question again: What the f*ck were you thinking? – even though the answer is all too obvious. You weren’t f*cking thinking at all. And now the whole country knows it – other than that 26% who, at the present rate, will be down to 2% by the time we go to the polls next November.

To blatantly lie to the American people about anything is bad enough. But when you lie to them about things they are undoubtedly going to find out you’ve been lying about, they get really pissed-off. They tend to think you’ve been treating them like dumbasses who are too stupid to catch on. That leads to people getting riled, getting mouthy, getting fired-up enough to go to the polls and teach the liars a lesson they won’t soon forget.

Well, all is not lost. You can still campaign on the Bush made the country safer thing – because he did. Thanks to his disastrous tenure in office, and his party members’ unwavering support of his every idiotic policy, the country is safe from having a Republican president elected to office for many, many, many years to come.

As they say, behind every dark cloud created by lyin’, theivin’, too-smart-for-their-own-good Republicans, there’s a silver lining.

As always, good luck in ’08!

3. One of the decidedly un-conservative aspects of modern Republicans is short term thinking
It's a bit of a misnomer to label Republicans as conservatives--at least as the word originally was meant. It doesn't conserve anything to fritter away 230 years of hard won global good will (nor to engage in imperialistic wars, nor to whittle away the Bill of Rights, nor to send American troops into a mislabeled, mismanaged war where they'll die and be wounded for lies).

To wrecklessly throw away money, treasure, lives, reputation, and legal traditions in pursuit of a quick buck in Iraq is the opposite of conservatism. It is adventurism, imperialism, and skullduggery. To achieve their goals, they look only at the short term, don't care about the consequences, and fool themselves into thinking it's the best way to promote the national interest.

They're not conservatives; they're con artists. What they were thinking isn't relevant. What we must do is educate their deluded and betrayed supporters.

27. And they achieve
their ends by appealing to the worst fears and lowest instincts. They have managed to seize power by exploiting the great dumbing down and a compromised media. In short, they are immoral scumbags ready to sell out our country to the highest bidder. They use flags, bibles, soldiers and disabled veterans as stage props. They should all die screaming.

4. Outstanding
I just wish I didn't have that uneasy feeling that too many people have the attention span of a cabbage, which coupled with a congenital inability ( or worse, unwillingness) to connect the dots, will be all too willing to keep voting for Republicans. God, I hope you're right. But brilliantly written as always, Ms. Greggs.

7. Thanks so much, and welcome to the party!

:hi:

This isn't about attention span. The impact this administration's policies have had on the hard-working middle-class, regardless of party affiliation, will continue to be felt for a long time to come.

It's easy to support your presdient when he's speaking in what you perceive to be the abstract. It's a whole 'nother story when you realize that thanks to his policies, you can't afford to send your kid to college, or keep your farm or trucking business operational, or see that total success in Iraq is imminent as has been promised since the day we went in.

Just as a rising tide floats all boats, a rising flood eventually reaches all houses, even those situated on the highest of hills.

The poor are even more fucked than before, the middle-class are barely holding on to what they've got, and the upper middle-class now realize their dreams of being part of the tax-exempt wealthy class are further away then ever.

You can lie to the people about anything - but when your lies impact their lives, up close and personal, you've got problems that NO spin in the world will un-do.

16. Another insomniac?....connecting the dots (or not)
One A.M. here in Albq. and I'm still up , writing on DU... you too apparently. I hear you'd been ill. Get some rest, we NEED you. Besides attention span, I also worry about these people's ability to connect the dots. I have a friend who is a sweet, kind person, but has been personally instructed by Jesus to vote Republican. She's a single working mother , who also has some fairly serious health issues. First she realized she was getting clobbered by gas prices, and even amazingly , allowed as to how " my liberal friends told me this would happen , and they were right". She now is being devastated by the health care system, and even more amazingly said she wants to see Sicko. You can imagine what she's thought of Michael Moore up till now: whatever Rush and the gang told her to think...yet, she still absolutely thinks of herself as a conservative and a Republican (thinks Pat Robertson is a swell guy, for example), and laughs when I try to get her to understand how all the other stuff is connected to these two issues that have hit home for her. I have a hunch she will never connect the dots to see how the whole right wing ideology that she unthinkingly believes in is responsible for making her situation so much worse. And I fear how many more like her may be out there. Thank you, Ms Greggs, for replying to me ( 2nd time since I recently joined DU). I feel honored. AND GET SOME SLEEP.

32. Sadly
its beyond spin, and I'm not sure how easy its going to be to undo the radical changes that have been put in place by this criminal class.

Its not just the war, and the resulting decline in national security and international good will. Its the fact that they have gutted the economy of the US like a trout, and pretty much done the same to the government - with the sole exception of creating a domestic SS to control the homeland.

We are in deep trouble, no matter who wins next time.

I only asked because I've never come across the name Nancy Breen since high school - and it doesn't hurt to ask. It's a small world - as I've learned here more than ever. A few of my fellow DUers (as I found out after many months, if not years) grew up within a few miles of where I grew up on Long Island. And a DUer who I corresponded with via PMs for a while turned out to be someone I know here in Toronto!

Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words.

22. One more question...
... for your great rant, Nance:

Did you ever think, in your wildest dreams, that Amurka would - could - ever be the most hated and vilified country in the world? And it only took 6 years! Since 2001 gas prices in my country (and most others) have increased by 50%+; international travel (apart from costing loads more) takes almost twice as long due to "security" - in countries that have never had even a hint of terrorism - and financial markets are negatively influenced globally by the US over-reaction to every orange alert that is triggered by a "gut reaction". Women in 3rd world countries with paternalistic cultures now appreciate, I'm sure, their aid funded condoms being replaced by lectures on abstinence their men will never attend.

In 6 short years the US has gone from Global Benefactor going back nearly a hundred years, to a hegemonistic pariah.

* - the rest of the world thanks you. Not.

This diary is right on in my view. The GOP has turned America into a 'no planning horizon' nation, and I see the effects upon education especially. We truly do need a totally new way, and cannot look to the GOP for this. I'm also quite sure we cannot look to Democrats either.

26. Thinking? Reptiles don't think!
They react.

The Rept-publican brain has no cerebral cortex to speak of, and their nervous systems are unencumbered by what we would call "emotions." They do experience feelings - lust, jealousy, superiority/inferiority, greed, envy - but those feelings are not complicated enough to be called emotions. They react to their negative feelings by lashing out at the rest of the world, and by stealing what belongs to others to feed their superiority complex.

It's an interesting question - do they really think the rest of us are SO stupid that we wouldn't catch on to what they are doing? They've known for generations now that MANY among us ARE that stupid. I think it's hubris - that superiority complex - that has allowed them to take it to the level that this administration has taken it to. They've counted on the fear they instill to keep those of us who have ALWAYS known what they are up to from having a voice to rationally discuss it with the rest of the country. They depend upon the negative feelings in others to keep them from thinking. It's actually all pretty brilliant. Except for that hubris. That will be their downfall, ultimately.

I like your line about "the country is safe from having a Republican president elected to office for many, many, many years to come." However, we need more than the ballot box to keep these Rept-publicans from continuing their plundering of our planet. We need the courts and the prisons as well. We cannot allow to happen what happened after Watergate and Iran-Contra. We need to actually go after them, try, convict, and remove them from society. Otherwise, just like with any other reptile, after a nap and a snack, they'll be back. They must be removed from society, permanently, and quite frankly, by any means necessary.

How long did it take the Iraqi people to figure out what they wanted to liberate was not Iraqis but oil?

Of course, they caught on faster than most Americans did.

At least they thought they could keep us all fooled untiled their was a Diebold machine in every voting booth, a Republican donor overseeing every news outlet and a partisan hack in every US Attorney's office.

To blatantly lie to the American people about anything is bad enough. But when you lie to them about things they are undoubtedly going to find out you’ve been lying about, they get really pissed-off. That leads to people getting riled, getting mouthy, getting fired-up enough to go to the polls and teach the liars a lesson they won’t soon forget.

You should add, Nance, that they blatantly lied about a matter that took the lives or crippled the sons and daughters of the people who once supported them. And many of them knew it was a lie, yet they are still telling it.
