I Think Today Was The Beginning Of Bush's End
It's hard to tell when the death spiral began: Terri Schiavo? Katrina?

But history will mark today as the beginning of the end for our would-be monarch.

Today, via teleconference, two of Bush's top incompetent boot-lickers in Iraq - Lt. Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, and Ambassador Ryan Crocker - told our Senate what most of us already knew: that Iraq would not meet the much-vaunted milestones set for September. They are already pleading for more time, and we're still two months before the deadline.

Now that the "one last deadline" will be blown, it must finally be crystal clear even to the Congressional Republicans that Iraq is only going to get worse, not better. And that, although Iraq is lost, Bush will not relent - he will not withdraw. Cut off his war funds and he'll take it from somewhere else - we all know that will happen. A stalemate between Bush and Congress will result in thousands more American casualties in an insane war that started on lies and will certainly end in defeat.

Unless we withdraw from Iraq and stop the bleeding, and do it fast, Congressional Republicans will become a very endangered species come January 2009. The shellacking they took last November will be a flea fart compared to what will happen in the next election - they will be decimated. To have any chance of salvation at the ballot box, they need to get the troops home quickly.

So: the troops have to come home. But Bush won't do it. The only answer is to get rid of Bush. The effort will be started by the Republicans, because it is a matter of their survival. I believe that the die was cast today.

We won't see articles of impeachment tomorrow. It will take some months before Republicans are ready to deliver the coup de grace. They will shift slowly but surely from their current beleaguered defense of Bush to open hostility. There is also the matter of Cheney - he must go before Bush.

This is it ladies and gentlemen - the impeachment train has left the station.

7. The problem isn't bush. The problem is those who tolorated bush. His presidential
powers will out live him. So hang up your flag, but if he isn't impeached the republic is lost.

4. If Congress cuts funds and Bush takes it from somewhere else, he's breaking the law (again)
US Constitution, Article 1, Section 9:

No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.

He'd be guilty of stealing from the treasury for his private use.

Even Hatch would vote to remove if that happened.

6. Well
I would like to say better late than never but then I have not lost a family member or a friend over there. A little too fucking late for all those poor innocent Iraqis too.

I will be happy to see it happen but this should have happened a LONG time ago. I find it difficult to get real excited about it anymore because frankly, I think the Democrats should have started this before and I really don't think it will happen anyway. I have no faith anymore in any of them.

8. How many times I have heard that and how many times they come screaming back
Each time we get a terror threat of some celebrity diversion in the news or a comatose girl needs saved.

I will hold my parties until they are kicked out of power.

9. I hope you're right, impeachment would be the right path
for the republican to take to try to rescue themselves but a more sinister path that they may take is to expand the war into Iran or a false flag incident here at home. We all have noticed the increased rhetoric of terrorism and Al Qaeda coming to america, at this point I don't know what hand the republicans will play next.

10. I almost think that's been the Democratic plan from day 1.
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 10:03 PM by Old and In the Way
When Pelosi announced that impeachment was "off the table", it, of course, torqued off the base. But I think she knew that a Democratic led effort early on would be spun as partisan BDS. So she's let it simmer, knowing that the relentless Congressional investigations and hearings are exposing the criminal core of this administration. Ultimately, Republicans will have to sign on to it as a bi-partisan judgment or risk complete annihilation in 2008. They will lose more if they don't, they may lose less if they do. True Republican moderates/conservatives are applying the heat now....they see 2008 quite clearly and are not ready to destroy their Party to save the sorry collective asses of Commander Nincompoop and his war-profiteering sidekick, Halliburton Guy.
