Big Red - aka Secretariat - enroute to winning the Belmont by 31 lengths to win the Triple Crown in 1973
Secretariat (read the Belmont portion at least!)

Belmont Stakes...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secretariat_(racehorse)

"Secretariat's stride at the finish was so powerful that it took jockey Ron Turcotte nearly two furlongs to pull him up.

In fact, after Secretariat galloped out for 1/8 mile after the race his time for 1 and 5/8 miles including the cool down is alleged to be 2 minutes 37.6 seconds, which would have broken a world record set by the great Swaps in 1956 by three lengths.

At the mile and 3/8 point, Secretariat had run faster than Man O' War's record from when the Belmont was run at that length.

Secretariat's winning margin of 31 lengths in the long and grueling Belmont Stakes is remembered as one of the most dramatic events in thoroughbred racing history. Time Magazine, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated featured Secretariat on their covers on June 11, 1973, the first to be featured on all three magazines' covers in the same week, though no journalists or racing experts had expected the pure and absolute domination that Secretariat exhibited. If the Beyer Speed Figure calculation had been developed during that time, Andrew Beyer calculated that Secretariat would have earned a figure of 139, one of the highest figures he has ever assigned. <1> Bettors holding 5,617 winning on-course Tote tickets never redeemed them."

Belmont is such a great race. The description of the wide shot at the end of the race and the cheering fans was wonderful.

Gore has the heart of a lion and the perseverance of a real champion. People don't know who they're dealing with but they'll find out when he declares his candidacy on the steps of the Florida Supreme Court and throws down with DNC telling them he'll win and he'll expect that every delegate selected is credentialed at the Democratic Convention;) Why not, that's how it's done when you need to break the mold to save the world.

4. He will have my full support--money--grassroots working for him...
..until the American public wakes up to the fact that he is OUR candidate and the only one who can save us from the horrors that await us from the fascistic machinations from the Bush regime, who plan to implement you know what!

5. "He is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!"
(the famous call at the Belmont, for anyone who might not know)

I think it quite possible we could see the same if Al were to run. Run, Al, Run!

8. I have a great deal ofrRespect for the guy we elected in 2000
but frankly he ran a terrible campaign. He should have won that election by Secretariat size lead. Then it would have been impossible for the GOP to steal it.

12. How do you figure that?
The only incumbent VP that has been elected in over 100 years was Poppy. There was Clinton fatigue, the press was against him, he got beat up during the primaries and started over 20 points down and yet, he still won. How is that a terrible campaign or are you just repeating the media talking points?

14. At the start of 2000 ...
Gore was polling behind Bush by 18 points. Bush outspent Gore, in some states by 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1. Plus Gore had a hostile media that made up bad stuff about him while ignoring Bush's lies. Yet Gore closed Bush's lead and got the most votes on election day. Sounds like he ran a pretty good campaign to me.
To say Gore ran a bad campaign is to parrot another media lie about him. One they invented to get themselves off the hook for all the other lies they told about Gore.

11. He's got to run. If nothing else, just to knock Hillary out. After what Clinton
did to him . . . and the country . . . by giving the Republicans the gasoline with which to immolate him with, Al owes them nothing.

Gore/Obama. Totally rocking and unstoppable.

13. I don't think Gore would even win the nomination
With Hillary and Obama raising $60+ million, they are the runaway front runners. I think it would be very hard for Gore at this late date to just come in swoop up the nomination. And frankly, I don't hear a lot of clamoring for Gore outside of DU. I like Gore a lot, but I just don't see him winning.

22. I've tried to explain that to folks here at DU. About how you have to have
an organization in every state working hard for months before the first primary. Al Gore surely knows that since he had a primary campaign awhile back. But we love Al so much, he is so endearing now with his eco-activism taken to a sublime level, that some of us think he is our perfect candidate. I think that is very unrealistic, but I understand it. I have always liked Al Gore and I totally respect his life choice in this. He is making a difference and I think that is what he really wants to do. HRC, if elected, should talk to him about a post in the administration. But he might not want to go down that path since it seems he feels "free" in what he is doing now.

18. How about Gore-RFK Jr.?
Or Kennedy-Gore?

The order of the names on the ticket wouldn't matter so much to me. Either way, America would win, as another wise DU poster recently said.

Draft RFK Jr. in 2008!

Do you think his heroin possession conviction might be a problem in today's tabloid-esque world?

24. Nah, I wouldn't worry...
...about RFK's heroin posession conviction. That was 25 years ago, and he's been clean and sober ever since. I think it's a dead horse.

Of course, his enemies will surely attempt to use this info against him, but he can easily retort with reminders of Bush's cocaine and alcohol issues, and how Bill Clinton smoked but didn't inhale...

Let's face it, nobody's got a squeaky-clean past. I think voters are more interested in what the candidate is doing/saying NOW, not what they did when they were in their 20s and partying like young'uns do.

I would very much like to find out his stand on the issue of decriminalization/legalization of illegal drugs. IMHO, there are too many Americans incarcerated every year on nonviolent drug offenses, and it all seems a horrible waste of taxpayer money and law enforcement resources. But I can't speak for Mr. Kennedy on this one.

Sure would be interesting to find out what he thinks, tho'...

21. I've had several repuke acquaintances tell me
they, too, are hoping Gore gets into the race because they are anxious to vote for him, in part to atone for having voted for the chimp in 2000.

He'd win and win big.
