Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 03:32 PM by saracat
John Conyers has actually done constructive things to end the war by his votes and his committee chairmanship.Cindy has done nothing but shoot off her mouth and look uneducated. I am absolutely disgusted that she would stage such a scene in front of the office of one of the best friend that this nation has.She has lost all credibility in the eyes of many. Sheehan cannot even begin to compete with the contributions John Conyers has made to this nation. She should be ashamed.Go after the GOP.They are the ones that have to impeach.Just like with Nixon.Cindy is a disgrace.Go ahead.Flame away. This is how I and many others feel.Cindy did good things one upon a time. Her day is over.

There will be what I suspect will be a huge demonstration Sept. 15.

46. I think some people elevate party over country and constitution. It's a shame,
because if the excuse given by many of our elected officials is analyzed the end result is:

Impeachment is too time consuming, we want to pass legislation that bush can attach signing statements to and ignore completely, so passing it is completely a waste of time. Except we expect it to help us in the election in 08.

I would say this is a strategy for defeat in 08. How many voters would rush to support this? And how many voters will rush to vote for a party that seems totally unwilling to defend our constitution and our country in favor of assumed ascension to power in 08?

65. Yes, John Q. - good summary
Remember the summer of Howard Dean - it finally seemed like we had someone who was actually going to stand up against the powers that be. People turned out in droves to support him.

This strategic calculation that not impeaching is going to help the Dems in '08 is wrong, just plain wrong.

She has contempt for the ones who are really trying. So does a PDA member here at DU who works with her.

To have contempt for the Democrats who work their butts off is nothing but contemptous to me.

She is taking over the office of one of our best guys. Take over Lieberman's office or something.

NOT!!! Lieberman is an SOB, but he never said he was going to do something about Bush. Conyers did and now he is backing out.

"I have a choice. I can either stand by and lead my constituents to believe I do not care that the president apparently no longer believes he is bound by any law or code of decency. Or I can act." --Rep. John Conyers

Still waiting for him to 'ACT'. Until then, he is fair game, just like all the other spineless creatures in D.C.

90. Oh sure, that's why they're upset. Because she's for ending the war
Why misrepresent the position of those who disagree?

And please don't ignore one of the main reasons several here have lost faith in Cindy: her comments regarding the Democratic Party, and her decision to run against a Democrat. There are quite a few Democrats here, and neither have sat well with several of them.

Also, many rather like Conyers, and don't think he deserved the protest. To think that is their right. It doesn't mean those who feel this way love war or hate the Constitution or hate Cindy.

21. What contributions has John Conyers made?
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 03:53 PM by Love Bug
I'm sure there are many here who can answer this better than me, but while congress was controlled by the republicans, Conyers was one of the few Democrats willing to investigate the Bush administration, even though the republicans in control at the time wouldn't even allow him the SPACE to do so -- he had to have hearings in the basement, fer crying out loud. He's been doing this for YEARS while he's been ignored by the media, congress and many in his own party. I admire Cindy Sheehan for what she has done for the peace movement, but she's going after the wrong Democrat. She needs to go after the Republicans who voted for this war and got her son killed in the first place. Impeachment is impossible without Republican votes in Congress. They are the ones who should be targeted.

Downing Street Minutes and Pre-War Intelligence
U.S. House of Representatives, Conyers, J. (D-MI)
Washington, District of Columbia (United States)
ID: 187209 - 06/16/2005 - 2:00 - ns

Conyers, John Jr., U.S. Representative, D-MI
Bonifaz, John C., Founder, National Voting Rights Institute
Wilson, Joseph, Deputy Chief of Mission (1988-91), Iraq
McGovern, Ray, Member, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity
Sheehan, Cindy, Mother

Rep. John Conyers, Jr., and other Democrats hold a public meeting concerning the “Downing Street Memo” and pre-war intelligence on Iraq.

On May 1, 2005 a Sunday London Times article disclosed the details of a classified memo, also known as the “Downing Street Minutes”, recounting the minutes of a July 2002 meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair with his advisers that depicted an American president already committed to going to war in the summer of 2002, despite contrary assertions to the public and the Congress. The minutes also described apparent efforts by Bush administration officials to manipulate intelligence data in order to justify the war to the international community.

I dearly love Sheehan, but at times she doesn't do the best thing.

OTOH, if I had lost my son, I would be so bonkers as to be scary. And since violence as retribution for a life lost does not accomplish anything but more violence - well, I just have to say, she's a better mom than I am.

It appears he was willing when he couldn't get a fucking room but...

Where are the impeachment hearings now??? Where are the hearings about the Downing Street Memo now??? Where are the hearings about the many and varied crimes against International Law NOW???

The god damn invertebrate Dems should have 6 hearings going at all times investigating the crimes of the bush crime family. It ain't like they don't have any to investigate...

Light a FIRE under the bastards until they do their fucking job!!!!

In case you've forgotten Conyers, here's your job description:

"I, Loyal Citizen of the Republic, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter."

22. and Cindy has ended the war?
I must have missed the announcement.

Look, Cindy's contributions to the antiwar movement were considerable (although she didn't create the movement). She put a visible face on the sacrifice that people were being asked to make for this useless endeavor. ANd I have no doubt that she helped persuade many people who instinctively and unquestionably supported the war to question it. But at this point, the public recognizes in considerable measure that the war was a mistake and wants us to get out. It would make more sense to me if Cindy would focus her efforts against the repubs that are blocking efforts to set a timetable (which is something that has widespread public support) rather than to go after Democrats who consistently vote against the war.

Cindy is acting, rather than following the "wait and see" approach of the so-called Democratic leaders.

We have an administration that has tossed out the Constitution and committed innumerable crimes. This is not time for keeping our powder dry. What happened to "Give me liberty or give me death"?

55. So how are they working hardest for us when they say
that impeachment is off the table?

In fact, they are violating their oath to uphold the Constitution if they do not proceed with impeachment immediately.

The Bush administration has declared themselves above the law - does that remind you of anyone? (maybe Hitler or Stalin?). Now is the time for impeachment, not later.

39. Cindy has accomplished a lot
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 04:21 PM by Proud_Lefty
She stands steadfast for peace, speaks truth and isn't afraid to admit her shortcomings, which causes growth in not only her personal endeavors, but the entire movement that formed beneath her. We all make choices in life that may or may not be the best according to everyone with their vast differences of opinion, but those that stand up and do the best they can, fighting for what most of us are too fearful to do, is certainly someone I would never attempt to condemn. Instead I applaud her.

I also feel sorry for the politicians that obviously are being blackmailed or threatened. There's just no other reasonable excuse for the actions of our elected officials that are more afraid of the White House than they are of their constituents. Conyers is awesome, but something pulls him back every once in a while, something that stinks big time (like maybe Cheney).

78. People in DC are threatened
It was well known that Paul Wellstone was called into Cheney's office before the vote on Iraq and Cheney told him that "grave consequences" would come to him if he voted against it. Wellstone voted against it and later, him and his whole family were killed in a plane accident. All of DC was freaked out, knowing it could have been any of them. This is deadly stuff here.

Back in the 90's, Ross Pero was gaining too much speed on his presidential campaign. Bush Sr. and Clinton tried laughing him off, but the public loved his brains and plans to fix our economy. As he was working his way ahead, all the sudden, he dropped out of the campaign. Months later, in an interview, he said that he was receiving calls from the White House threatening his family. People just blew it off, but I understood why he backed out.

Now you look at all the senators and congress members selling out their souls / ideals for the benefit of the crooks in the White House. It doesn't make sense at all until you put together these two known stories of physical threats together with the many stories of sex parties, drugs, cameras and heavyduty blackmail. Don't forget how our media can get Joe Public all worked up about anything it wants, even who the father is of Anna Nichol-Smith's baby. Get a picture out or a stained blue dress and the media can manipulate us like no one ever realizes, keeping these creeps stronger and our devoted politicians, even our closest ally, John Conyers, at their mercy.

And, Cindy might have just served as the catalyst to get him the air time to say it.

I hate that kind of stuff. Take impeachment and turn it into a fringey-far-left idea, complete with sit-ins, "hey hey ho ho" chants, and cheesy arrest scenes, and the rest of middle America won't want to be associated with it--she's hurting more than helping, and I'm not even talking about the challenge to Pelosi (a non-threat if ever there was one). At the very least, go sit in Mitch McConnell's or John Warner's office, Cindy. Give THEM a headache, force THEM to deal with you--not a guy who's busy investigating ChimpCo crimes.

79. Why would drawing attention to Conyers and Pelosi help the impeachment
cause? It's certainly not going to force either of them act--they've already considered the angles, the politics, and the logistics of it, and it won't be Sheehan who pushes them into something they have decided not to do--I wouldn't respond to those tactics, either, if I were them. It's also preaching to the choir, in terms of public perception. Anti-war/impeachment activists aren't drawing attention to the lying, unpatriotic, obstructionist GOP, they're eating their own instead. How does that change public perception or get anyone fired up, except for a few here on DU who are only too eager for a chance to bash Democrats every chance they get?

I'm not "applauding" thier intransigence. I am for impeachment. This just isn't going to make it happen, OR make it palatable to Joe and Mary Sixpack. THEY are the force that will get impeachment to happen, because they have had enough of Bush and their GOP enablers--average citizens, Repub, Dem, Indie, unaffiliated--and disrupting Conyers' office and threatening Nancy will probably not appeal to them. It doesn't win me over. Focusing a spotlight on the GOP/ChimpCo cockroaches and their insidious activities is the way to go--NOT attacking those who are useful to the mission.

72. She's an activist...
...and activists of necessity step on people's toes.

Now I am a great admirer of John Conyers, and I believe him to be a man of integrity. He has certainly pushed a lot of things forward that need pushing and I am thankful for that. And I'm a bit torn about making his the office that gets the demonstration...

...but on the other hand, he and the other Democratic members of Congress need to hear from the people now and then as to what are appropriate priorities.

We hear every day, on the damned talk-news programs, how it's the "antiwar left" that is pushing impeachment. Never will you hear an acknowledgment that in fact 49% of the people are for starting impeachment against Bush, and 51% favor starting impeachment against Cheney. Yet if you watch MSM you'll still think it's somehow a radical position to take.

I dunno. It's hard. I don't want our party to self-destruct, but damn, I'm fed up with the status quo.

So what would be a constructive action that addresses the absolute, utter outrageousness of not impeaching everyone in this illegal immoral regime? And how many laws does an office holder need to break before they can be impeached without all the hand-wringing?

I'm not just asking rhetorically.

Can we then say the same about Cindy that others are saying about that night? That it was an empty political stunt?

Are these things defined by their results? Or were both actions good in their way if they brought more debate or more attention or more media to the issue?

I'm not happy with the idea that people will cheer Cindy even if her action didn't have a real result, and yet some will belittle the Senate for their action because it didn't have a real result.

94. Right.
Conyers specifically asked us to be patient. He knows exacty who and what he (and we) are dealing with and I trust that he knows the best way to approach this. The actions taken against him today were disrespectful of someone who deserves nothing but the greatest respect from all of us.

From The Brad Blog

...
"What are we waiting for? Let's take these two guys out," Conyers reportedly told the enthusiastic crowd at a Progressive Democrats of America event in San Diego. He later repeated the same line according to the caller, "KPete," who wrote more about the event at Democratic Underground yesterday. She reported that the comment was met by "huge cheers."

A similar account of Conyers's statement was offered by progressive talk show host Bree Walker who also attended the same event.

Conyers reportedly urged patience in the process, and asked for everyone's support as things moved forward first with Cheney, and then with Bush.

The entire hour on Impeachment from Friday's show with de la Vega can be heard as archived on this previous post.

On Edit:

The ONLY thing that Murtha has gotten right in years is opposition to Iraq. He's not opposed to war, just un-winnable wars. Other than that, he's never seen a bloated, expensive weapons system he couldn't love...

Most of the time Congress is crooked as hell. It's a snake-pit of dirty deals, influence peddling and corruption...Dem or repuke...

But, once in a great while, like during the nixon impeachment process, they rise above the muck and protect the Constitution and by extension, We the People of the United States.

I pray that once again, they can rise above their normal concupiscence and perform as well as their predecessors did during nixon.

113. There is NO "constructive" short of impeachment.
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 03:04 PM by pat_k
Everything is hostage to the monarchical regime. As long as impeachment is "off the table," the Congressional leadership will not tangibly advance any other "priority" they claim impeachment would "distract" them from.

If they could manage to "cut the funding" with a veto-proof majority, bushncheney have proven that they have no qualms about claiming the "right" to nullify with a signing statement.

If they decide to invoke their inherent power to hold Meirs in contempt, bushncheney, and their allies in the war on the the Constitution on SCOTUS have proven they wouldn't hesitate to issue a treasonous edict to strip them of that power. Anything the leadership does, short of impeachment, is just an opportunity for the fascists to say f-off and wait for to SCOTUS to (bush v) "gore" them.

The Democratic Party's historical "weakness" is what got us into this mess. As long as the possibility of impeachment is banned from the "reality" of the beltway, Democrats will continue to prove the electorate's perception that they are wimps.

Even in the beltway it is the assumption that the Democrats ARE WIMPS that has led them to conclude "The Dems aren't gonna impeach. No way; no how."

Conyers is the closest thing we had to an impeachment advocate. His refusal to act is the BIGGEST barrier we face to making impeachment a reality.

Conyers is making a HORRIBLE mistake. He is one of the ones most likely to wake up to reality. If he doesn't wake up before the 110th Congress adjourns, I have little doubt that he will regret it to the end of his days.

The "attackers" who are seeking to rescue the Constitution are doing Conyers a service.
