22. A few reasons
1. If I am not mistaken, there were commercial breaks during the debate. That is extremely inappropriate. I don't remember any other network ever doing this during a debate.

2. The impeachment question, which I understand was the question most people wanted asked, was not. I don't buy the argument that it's not relevant. We need to know if they will respect the separation of powers in the Constitution that Bush is flauting, and restore the constitutional rights that the Bush administration has eroded. We need to know under what circumstances they would call for Congress to press forward with impeachment.

3. Cooper cut off the most important question, about election reform, after one answer, to go to a commercial break. How convenient.

4. The minor candidates got extremely short shrift. I don't remember hearing from Kucinich after the first hour, except when Cooper made a comment that no one was to the left of Kucinich. Even Gravel got more time if I am not mistaken. Cooper chose who besides the candidate addressed would answer the question, if indeed a specific candidate was addressed.

29. Andrea ----

CNN/You Tube have been stating for months now that this is a FIRST, and that they knew there would ultimately be bugs to be worked out because of it.

Geez.. the idea of utilizing YouTube videos into a political debate is awesome!

But there's no way in hell that their first ever production will go off without a hitch.

Why on earth should we flood CNN with complaints for trying a new approach?

I agree with you about the commercials though. They should NOT have commercials during any debates..

30. The commercials alone merit a complaint
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 09:52 PM by AndreaCG
It is crass pandering to advertisers and the "bottom line" rather than the inherent news value of the debate. IT also screws up the pacing, presumes the audience doesn't the arttention span to sit through 2 hours of a debate and sets a bad precedent for future debates.

I had no problem with the You Tube question format. Except that they ignored the most requested one about impeachment. Other than that, the debate format wasn't particularly different from any others My problem was with the other points I stated, like the less prominent candidates being ignored.

25. I thought it was gimmicky and less serious than others.
many of the videos may have been clever, but in this context they were just distracting. It's like an excuse for CNN to interview new graphics people. Lot's of time and effort collecting/sorting/editing the videos, and 30 seconds for a candidate to explain their healthcare plan. Same BS, new gimmick.

I have a new idea for a debate.

Select the questions however you want to. Candidates get to write out a 200 word answer in advance. Then the candidates get to pick whoever they can talk into to read their responses for them during the debate.

You would get well thought out answers to carefully selected questions and eloquent delivery. It would be no more or less theater than it is now, and it would be infinitely more entertaining.

31. Nothing about the loss of the middle class and good jobs.
Except peripherally, Kucinich saying he'd repeal NAFTA and stop the trade deficit with China.
