5. Look at where the eventual 2nd place finisher was in the polls at the time

He was essentially within the MoE with the last place candidate. That is an example of how much things can change in 6 months. Also, while there was no front-runner in July of 2003 there clearly was by the winter of 2003: Howard Dean (with Wesley Clark a solid second). He had a healthy lead in all the polls, raised by far the most money, etc. What happened? He finished a distant 3rd in Iowa and was not a contender for the rest of the primaries. A similar fate befell the 2nd place candidate, Clark, although he did win in Oklahoma and remain viable longer than Dean.
