"Matt Santos" on being a liberal
Can someone please find his comments during the "debate" on the West Wing?

If I remember, they were powerful, staking a claim to what being a liberal means and reclaiming the term.

3. Thank you!
MS:"I know you like to use that word 'liberal' as if it were a crime."

AV: "No. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have used that word. I know Democrats think liberal is a bad word. So bad you had to change it. What do you call yourselves now, progressives? Is that it?"

MS: "It's true. Republicans have tried to turn liberal into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country."

AV: "A Republican President ended slavery."

MS: "Yes, a liberal Republican, Senator. What happened to them? They got run out of your party. What did liberals do that was so offensive to the liberal party? I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor."

Inevitably, the term “liberal” was contested, as well.

“Republicans have tried to turn ‘liberal’ into a bad word,” said Santos.

“Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.”

“A Republican president ended slavery,” Vinick retorted.

“Yes, a LIBERAL Republican, Senator. What happened to THEM?”

Hope this helps!

5. WAAAAAaaaa... I miss "West Wing" soooo much. This next election I'm going to vote for
whoever promises to bring back Pres. Bartlett, C.J., Charlie, Josh and the rest.

Now I don't even have "Studio 60". When are these idiot bastards going to realize what great TV is and keep these wonderful shows around? Aaron Sorkin is my favorite storyteller and he gets my vote anytime...

Sorry to subject you to my pathetic, whiny, rant, but I seriously mourn that show.

7. re Santos win
I read a while back that Sorkin said the plan was to have Vinick win, and then invite Santos into his cabinet to show that a new type of Republican had taken over. But then John Spencer died, meaning they had to kill Leo McGarry, and they didn't want that much calamity fall on the very sympathetic character of Santos.

8. Yes, was nice fiction
that can never happen in real life..

I really tried to watch "Studio 60" but could not keep my interest.

I think that Sorkin had other programs that appealed to a very narrow segment. The West Wing - well who is not interested in the working of the White House?
