6. Obama made a gaffe, Clinton is looking to exploit it.
I know nuance is hard for you BD but the fact is both Obama and Clinton seek diplomacy.

Their position on this is similar if not identical.

The difference is what was said in the debate.

If the shoe was on the other foot, Obama's campaign tema would be going after Clinton.

Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 06:48 PM by killbotfactory
And then makes the assumption that Obama will do no diplomatic work beforehand, so that she has a reason to criticize him. Like he'll just get on air force one and *poof* next thing you know he'll be dining with Kim Jong Il at the top of the empty concrete monstrosity called the Ryugyong Hotel or something.

39. It was a great answer. She never said that we (US govt) would not talk to
Iran, Syria and others. She said the groundwork would have to be laid first and she was not going to PROMISE that she would talk to the leaders of these countries in her first year in office. It's quite a leap to say with certainty that she would not talk to them. She just is not going to make a PROMISE that she might not be able to keep for a number of reasons. The Dems always fall victim to the media framing and re-framing our issues and misrepresenting what our candidate say. But if Hillary can't fix this with the unthinking public it will cost her. Afterall, it's the "sheeple" that come out and vote.

8. Obama's response to the question was perfectly fine.
The only problem, Clinton's response was much better. It showed her grasp of the complexities of foreign policy to an extent greater than Obama. Again, in a vacuum his comment was not a bad response - its the instant comparison that finds him wanting.

11. She is Flip Flopping
http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_112220939.html

(CBS/AP) DECORAH, Iowa Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday criticized President Bush's foreign policy, and said if she were president she would do things differently, including beginning diplomatic talks with supposed enemies and sending envoys throughout the world.

"I would begin diplomatic discussions with those countries with whom we have differences, to try to figure out what is the depth of those differences," said Clinton, who spoke to about 1,000 people at Luther College in Decorah in northeastern Iowa.

"I think it is a terrible mistake for our president to say he will not talk with bad people. You don't make peace with your friends -- you have to do the hard work of dealing with people you don't agree with," said Clinton, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

Opening talks with other countries doesn't mean the U.S. won't defend its interests whenever necessary, she said, "but what it means is that we should discuss other routes before we decide we're going to pursue military options.

"We cannot provide the leadership we need unless we are willing to try engage the other countries," she said,

Hillary's answer was a thoughtful one, and I agree she has a handle on the complex nature of diplomacy.

Chavez is not a dictator and Cuba has been a victim of US-sponsored terrorism. If Cuba were to adopt America's foreign policy, Cuban planes would be bombing American cities in retaliation for American aggression and terrorism.

48. I totally agree with your 2nd paragraph, I just meant
that just because dems get in the WH in 2008, we don't want to be perceived as sucking-up.

I think that diplomacy with other nations is complex, and after 7 years of an idiot president who refuses to talk with other nations, I realize many countries will be anxious to repair relations with the US. And of course that is a good thing, but it will be a delicate balance.

So it was not spin, just a concern about perception.
